industry. He was a passionate member of the American Rose Society,

growing a vast number of rose varieties. He researched, wrote and lec-

tured about roses, won many local and national trophies as an exhibitor,

and established local rose gardens in his community.

CLASS OF 1960

William R. Bailey Jr.

of Camden, Maine, died January 21, 2014. In 1951,

he was drafted into the U.S. Army as a sergeant. Enrolled at St. Law-

rence in 1956, he was a class officer, a resident assistant and a member

of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the Career Planning Council and the InterFra-

ternity Council. With entrepreneurial spirit, he would deliver students’

laundry in his blue Plymouth. After graduating with his B.A. in econom-

ics he went to the New York Institute of Finance for training in security

analysis and registered representative certification. He began a career

in equities brokerage, eventually settling in Camden and supporting

himself with his love of buying and selling cars.

Irving B. Smith

died

at his home in Merritt Island, Fla., on June 5, 2014. He received a B.S. in

chemistry and was a member of Beta Theta Pi and the L Club. He also

participated in ROTC and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the

U.S. Army. His family travelled with him throughout the U.S. and Europe

during his 22 years of military service.

Ronald H. Woods

died April 8,

2014, at his home in Huntsville, Texas. Before coming to St. Lawrence, he

joined the U.S. Coast Guard, going to sea on the cutter

Cook Inlet

and

then working as a recruiter. At St. Lawrence, he was a brother of Sigma

Alpha Epsilon and majored in business administration. He then attended

Cornell University, studying industrial and labor relations. He worked in

human resources at oil companies for 32 years.

CLASS OF 1961

Margaret Potter Daniels

died at her home in Longmeadow, Mass.,

on June 20, 2014. She received a B.S. in chemistry with honors and was

inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi and

sang with the Laurentian Singers. She worked at Corning Glass Works

in the 1960s and later as a computer systems analyst until she retired

in 1996. She loved spending time at the family cottage in Greensboro,

Vt., and was very active in her church.

Nancyann O. Orth

of Port

Jefferson, N.Y., died May 25, 2014. She received a B.A. in English and was

a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She earned her M.A. at Middlebury

College.

Robert J. Steer

of Calgary, Alberta, died July 10, 2014. “Bum”

played goalie on the men’s hockey team and was a brother of Sigma

Alpha Epsilon and member of the L Club. He worked for 35 years in

pharmaceuticals, retiring to be at all of his grandchildren’s functions. He

is also survived by his wife, two children and two step-children.

CLASS OF 1962

James P. “Jim” Laible

of Denton, Texas, died May 27, 2014. He

majored in sociology with honors and was a member of Sigma Chi,

the football team and ROTC. Commissioned as a regular army officer,

he served for 26 years in the Medical Service Corps, including time in

Vietnam. He earned a master’s degree in health care administration

from Baylor University and became a colonel. He held administrative

positions in hospitals after he retired from the Army. Remembering him

are his wife of 51 years, son, daughter and several grandchildren.

CLASS OF 1967

Bruce G. Crawford

of Lebanon, N.H., died April 14, 2014. He gradu-

ated with a B.S. in psychology. He was a member of ROTC, L Club and

Alpha Tau Omega. An accomplished downhill and Nordic skier, he com-

peted on the U.S. Army biathlon team while he was stationed in Alaska.

He worked for Eastman-Kodak for 37 years, retiring in 2007 as manager

of the government contracts division. Continuing his love of Nordic

skiing, he groomed the trails and made signs for the Pine Hill Ski Club in

New London, N.H. Those remembering him include his wife of 43 years,

Laura McCorkle Crawford ’69, and son, Andrew B. Crawford ’99.

CLASS OF 1969

Richard L. Hughes

died June 23, 2014, in Santo Domingo, Domini-

can Republic, to where he had retired in 2009. He played lacrosse and

performed with Mummers and the Laurentian Singers, singing tenor. A

member of ROTC, after receiving a B.A. in English he served in the U.S.

Army during the Vietnam era, achieving the rank of captain. He worked

in the garment industry and then as a private chef. His survivors include

a son, two grandchildren and two brothers.

Margaret “Meg” Yandon

White

of Rancho Cordova, Calif., died March 3, 2014. She majored in

English and participated in the first program in Spain, 1967-1968. She

was preceded in death by her father, C. Edmond Yandon ’34.

CLASS OF 1981

Theodore M. “Ted” Strathdee

of Riverside, Conn., died June 25,

2014. A brother of Sigma Chi, he was listed in

Who’s Who Among

American University and College Students

. Of his two majors, he

always said that psychology was much more useful in business than

economics. He worked for most of his career as a financial planner with

Smith Barney. An avid athlete, he loved soccer, running, tennis, golf and

bicycling. He is survived by his wife and two children.

CLASS OF 2015

Timothy St. Onge

, of Constable, N.Y., died May 16, 2014, having bat-

tled a life-long rare skin disorder, recessive dystrophic epidermolysis

bullosa. A history major, he was an avid hockey fan who could often be

found playing a game of street hockey with members of the women’s

team on campus, and had hoped to become a teacher.

memorial notices of the passing of Laurentians if we receive the informa-

tion from a family member or friend in the form of a previously published
