evening of our graduation day

did many hands-on tasks in the
dairy barn as well as the lab, and
researched the effects of slow hay
feeders on feeding behaviors and
nutrient digestibility in Morgan
horses. Her experiences validated
that she wants a career working
with large animals.

is working at

got hitched
in November 2013 and was ac-
cepted into the Beta Program in
Madrid, Spain, to teach English for

gist and geochemistry scientist
on geology, geochemistry and

Haley Burrowes

a job in the admissions office at

Barbara Tripp Williams
died April 25, 2014, at her home in Horse-
shoe Bay, Texas. She majored in English while earning honors and
membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She was on the staff of
The Laurentian
Magazine
and a member of Kappa Delta. After earning a master’s
degree from SUNY New Paltz, she taught Latin and English before mov-
ing into elementary education. She and her husband retired to the Blue
Ridge Mountains, where she enjoyed golfing, bridge and music. In 2005,
she moved to be near her daughter in Texas. She is also survived by her
son, Richard C. “Rick” Williams ’64.

Virginia “Ginnie” Harner Frink
of Boise, Idaho, died May 12, 2014.
She attended St. Lawrence as a transfer student for one year before
leaving to marry in 1939. She taught English to Turkish nationals who
were coming to the United States to continue their education. She
worked with the Boise Philharmonic and was actively associated with
the League of Women Voters and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Arthur J. O’Connell
died May 21, 2014, in Brewster, Mass. He was an
English major and a member of Alpha Tau Omega,
The Hill News
staff
and the Outing Club. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army’s
field artillery, stationed in northern Africa and then Italy. He worked for
Norcross Greeting Card Company, first as a salesman and then in sales
management. In 1949, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Tew O’Connell ’46n;
they retired in 1992, splitting their time between Brewster and Tequesta,
Fla. He was predeceased by both Betty and his daughter Barbara ’75
and son, Timothy ’82, in whose name the family established a memorial
scholarship at St. Lawrence. He is survived by daughter Anne ’73.

Marjorie “Midge” Dean Sanborn
died April 19, 2014, in Oakland, Ca-
lif. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta,
The Hill News
staff, and Beta
Beta Beta, the honorary society for biology, her major. She entered the
U.S. Navy as an ensign in the supply corps and was stationed at Pearl
Harbor. She was active with the Alta Bates Volunteer Board for over 35
years and enjoyed travelling, gardening, cooking and baking.

Garth E. Kauffman
died May 27, 2014, at his home in Salisbury, Conn.
He is remembered by his daughters Tracy Kauffman Agro ’78 and Christy
Kauffman Valentine ’84, who is married to Alan J. Valentine ’81. Garth
graduated magna cum laude, earning departmental honors in English
and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He also was a member of Beta The-
ta Pi. Serving in World War II, Garth was an LCT officer in the Anzio and
Southern France invasions and a gunnery officer on the
U.S.S. Enterprise
in the Pacific. He graduated from Harvard Business School in 1949 and
worked in advertising, retiring from Young and Rubicam in New York as
vice president. He then served as director of development at Greenwich
Academy. At St. Lawrence, he was an alumni trustee and was president
of the Alumni Council 1962-1964.

Gloria Wright Lyng
of Hilton Head Island, S.C., died May 22, 2014.
She played field hockey and basketball and was a member of Kappa
Kappa Gamma. After receiving her B.S. in psychology, she married Ken-
neth H. Lyng ’44. He preceded her in death in 1982. She is survived by
her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Lyng Baroody ’71 and Richard J.
Baroody ’72; son, Kenneth H. “Chip” Lyng Jr ’75; and daughter and son-
in-law, Elizabeth “Betsy” Lyng Sauter ’77 and A. William “Bill” Sauter ’77.

Phyllis Failing Marvin
of Queensbury, N.Y., died April 29, 2014. She
pledged Pi Beta Phi and wrote for
The Hill News.
She was also elected
to Mortar Board. Her major in history combined with a master’s in
education aided her in her career as a social studies teacher at Glens
Falls Middle School from 1969 to 1986. She promoted local history as
a volunteer for the Chapman Historical Museum. She and her husband
enjoyed boating on Lake George and travelling, visiting more than 30
countries in their lifetimes.

Peter F. Brucato Sr.
of Whitefish, Mont., died April 22, 2014. He served
in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After the war he entered St.
Lawrence, where he was a member of the ski team. He was a 1948 alter-
nate for the U.S. Olympic Ski Team and completed the 1956 Olympic sail-
ing trials. Working for US Steel, he settled in Sun Valley, Idaho, where he
married and began raising three sons. He is survived by them, his brother
and five grandchildren.
William C. “Bill” O’Riley
of North Port, Fla.,
died April 14, 2014. A veteran of World War II, he majored in economics.
After commanding the police department in Lake George, N.Y., he joined
the Office of Naval Intelligence as a special agent. He retired in 1983
and began employment with MSM Security Services Inc. in Maryland.
Remembering him are his wife of 64 years and two children.

Karen Pflugheber Gunnison
of Riverton, Wyo., died May 20, 2014.
She majored in English and pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. She became
a high school English teacher, retiring in 1989. She was predeceased by
her parents, Fern Hubbard Pflugheber ’29 and Edward G. Pflugheber
’30. Those remembering her include her son, Stanley H. Gunnison ’77;
brother, Edward G. Pflugheber Jr. ’52, who is married to Joan Hansen
Pflugheber ’53; and nieces Gina Pflugheber-Wells ’77, Ellen Pflugheber
Taber ’80 and Jill D. Pflugheber ’86.
Samuel R. Whiting
died July 7,
2014, at his home in Delmar, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after high
school and was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. At St. Lawrence,
he majored in English and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He
earned his J.D. from Albany Law School in 1964 and began 40 years as
a lawyer. Also a ski instructor at Windham Mountain in the Catskills, he is
survived by his wife, two daughters and two granddaughters.

Joan Jensen Brandt
of Tucson, Ariz., died July 30, 2013. A business
administration major, she was a member of Mummers and Pi Beta Phi.
She began a career in advertising in New York City. In 1971, she and her
husband, Hank, moved to Tucson and opened Hank Brandt Associates,
Inc., an advertising and fundraising firm. She enjoyed golfing and being
with their family and friends at their camp on Lake Champlain.

enie “Genie” Van Drooge Kissinger
of Melville, N.Y., died April 26,
2014. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi and the women’s basketball
team at St. Lawrence, where she also earned a B.A. in economics. Hav-
ing started out making sandwiches and cooking for participants of the
United Way, she had become director of the United Way’s agency rela-
tions division by the time of her retirement in 1991.
Stuart K. Krupkin
of Sarasota, Fla., died March 30, 2014. He was active with the Geology
Club, the Jewish Student Union, KSLU,

staff, L Club, and
the baseball and basketball teams. He studied economics and after
graduating served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a supply
sergeant in Alaska. Expanding his father’s business, he started Lewis
Uniform Company in 1957 in Watertown, N.Y., before moving the com-
pany to Syracuse in 1964. He was active in his communities and enjoyed
painting.
Laurence W. “Larry” Schneible
of Rocky River, Ohio, died
May 16, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Dody” Beiermeister
Schneible ’54, daughter Carol Schneible Lewis ’80 and granddaughter
Jessie R. Lewis ’14. He majored in sociology at St. Lawrence. A brother
of Beta Theta Pi, he competed on the hockey and football teams and
was a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame.

Richard R. “Dick” Collins
died May 22, 2014, in Tacoma, Wash. He
joined the Air Force in 1950 and served during the Korean War. With sup-
port from the GI Bill, he attended St. Lawrence, receiving a degree with
honors in physics and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He taught high
school physics for two years, then joined the Navy to work on the Polaris
Missile program. After serving on the
U.S.S. America
for three years dur-
ing the Vietnam War, he retired in 1977 and enjoyed traveling and being
outdoors with his family.
Barbara A. Gray
of Farmingdale, N.Y., died
June 19, 2014. She majored in history at St. Lawrence and was elected
to Phi Beta Kappa. She pledged Pi Beta Phi.
Edmund W. Griffith Jr.
died June 19, 2014, in Mobile Ala. He sang with the Laurentian Singers,
pledged Sigma Pi and majored in business administration. Continuing
his education at the University of Alabama, he retired from the insurance
InMemory
