2 winter 2014 | St. Lawrence University Magazine
On the cover:
The bells of the Bachellar Memorial Chime were
donated by Irving Bacheller, an 1882 graduate of
St. Lawrence and author of the first best-selling
novel of the 20th century,
Eben Holden
, which
is set in the Canton vicinity. He gave them in
memory of his beloved wife, Ann, who had died
a short time before. The largest bell bears this
inscription:
To Ann Bacheller, Musician, Wife, Comrade.
My love for her put a new song in my heart.
Therefore let the singing of these bells be the
voice of my gratitude.

FIRST LOOK
The Fire Was Extinguished, but Not the Candle
The George Davis Judson Memorial Window, also known as the Great North Window, dominates
Gunnison Memorial Chapel above its main entrance, facing Richardson Hall. Dedicated in May
1972, it bears the University’s motto, “We have lit a candle in the wilderness which will never be
extinguished,” and many other representations of University life, history and purpose. A fire that
damaged the chapel on Oct. 6, 2013, appears not to have affected this or any of the other two
dozen stained-glass chapel windows. For more, turn to page 14.
The Bells Will Ring Again
A fire on Oct. 6, 2013, destroyed Gunnison Memorial
Chapel's spire and steeple and caused considerable
smoke and water damage to the revered edifice and its
contents. Restoration plans are underway.
