1939
Julia Hutchins Smith
passed away
on February 15, 2012, in Plattsburgh, N.Y. She
received her B.S. in mathematics and was a case-
worker for 20 years for the Clinton County De-
partment of Social Services. Survivors include her
sisters, Eleanor Hutchins Parsons ’39 and Eloise
Hutchins De Falco ’43.
1944
Marilyn Weider Donovan
of Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fla., died March 19, 2012. She
pledged to Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Richard N.
Donovan ’43, who was a NewYork State Supreme
Court Justice.
1947
Edric R. “Ed”Mason
of New Hope,
Pa., passed away on December 29, 2011. He ma-
triculated in 1940 andwas president of theOuting
Club, played varsity football and was a brother of
Beta Theta Pi. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy
as an aviator andwas awarded the Navy Cross. Af-
ter the end of the war, he returned to St. Lawrence
to earn his degree in business administration. He
was predeceased by his brother Richard C. Mason
’50. Those remembering him include his brother
and sister-in-law, John D. ’48 and Bobbette Ann
Whitlock ’49 Mason.
1950
Alice Wilson Allen
of Voorheesville,
N.Y., passed away on March 20, 2012. She ma-
jored in sociology and was a member of Pi Beta
Phi, the Outing Club, and
The Hill News
. In 1958,
she received her master’s and teaching certi ca-
tion from Oneonta State Teachers College and
taught for 33 years. Her survivors include her
brother, St. Lawrence Trustee Chairman Emeritus
E.B. “Ed” Wilson ’53, and sister-in-law Mary Beth
“Betsy”Weilbacher Wilson ’55.
1950
Henry L. Hulbert,
a lifetime resident
of Oneonta, N.Y., died on March 10, 2012. He
pledged to St. Lawrence’s chapter of Phi Sigma
Kappa and received his BA in government. He
went on to earn his LL.B. from Columbia Univer-
sity in 1952 and, after serving in the U.S. Army
during the Korean War, returned to Oneonta to
practice law. He was a generous man who active-
ly supported his family and community. His sur-
vivors include his daughters, Sue-Anne DeBergh
’88n and Sally Dunleavy ’91.
1951
William F. “Bill” Andes Sr.
of River-
head, N.Y., passed away on March 13, 2012. He
was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, the “L” Club
and the Newman Club. He sang in the University
Choir, played hockey and was a resident assistant.
After earning his degree in business administra-
tion from St. Lawrence, he earned his LL.B. from
Saint John’s University in 1958. His survivors in-
clude his son, William Jr. ’82.
1954
Mary Craig Brace
of Redding, Calif.,
passed away on March 24, 2012. She was a sister
of Delta Delta Delta. Shemade the Dean’s List and
was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the honor-
ary society for sociology. Originally from Canton,
N.Y., she married a Clarkson alumnus, and they
moved to southern California, where they lived
and raised their family until retiring to Redding.
1956
William G. “Bill” Bruce Jr.
of Lake
Placid, N.Y. died on March 17, 2012. He received
his BA in sociology and was a member of Sigma
Pi and the ROTC. He served in the U.S. Army and
then worked as a manufacturer’s agent, selling
manufactured goods in New Jersey and Virginia,
before moving to Lake Placid.
1957
Robert A. Mitchell
passed away on
February 11, 2012, at his home inWhitesboro, N.Y.
He pledged to Phi Sigma Kappa and was involved
with campus broadcasting, publications and
student government as a member of the Thelo-
mathesian Society. After receiving his degree in
business administration, he earned his master’s in
education from SUNY Oneonta in 1964. His survi-
vors include his brother John A. Mitchell ’58.
1958
Kenneth A. Maylath
died on Janu-
ary 28, 2012, in Baltimore, Md. He received his
BA in English, with honors. He was inducted into
Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of the The-
lomathesian Society and ROTC. He served two
years in the U.S. Army and then, having become
involved with radio at St. Lawrence, began work-
ing for radio stations in Pennsylvania and New
York before settling in Baltimore. He was the host
of “Conference Call” on WFBR-AM and the news
director of WCBM-AM.
1959
C. Kenneth Danis
of Pompano Beach,
Fla., passed away on April 2, 2012. He served in
the U.S. Navy from 1951 through 1955 before
entering St. Lawrence and earning his degree in
economics. He is survived by his two children, a
brother and two nephews.
1968
Anne B. Aspinall
of Sagaponack, N.Y.,
died on February 16, 2012. She was a sister of
Kappa Kappa Gamma and received the Pan-Hel-
lenic Association Award. An Orientation leader,
she also received theMortar Board Service Award.
She was the chairman of the Secretariat for the
Model U.N. Security Council in 1967 and 1968,
graduating with a degree in government. A skill-
ful equestrienne, she became a respected hunter-
jumper trainer. She was a founding member of
the Hampton Classic Horse Show and served as
president of its board of directors.
1976
Frank A. Bersani Jr.
of Syracuse, N.Y.,
died on February 11, 2012 while in Clearwater, Fla.
He received his BA in government from St. Law-
rence and his JD fromSyracuse University in 1980.
He eventually founded his own law rm and was
active in his church and community. He is missed
by his family, including his brother Thomas A. Ber-
sani ’78.
1985
Melanie A. Sayles Erickson
of Nor-
wich, N.Y., passed away on February 6, 2012. She
graduated fromNorwichHigh School andworked
for the Chenango and Unadilla Telephone Com-
pany as an operator until 1971, when she married
Edward J. Erickson M’83. He was in the U.S. Army
and they lived in many di erent places nationally
and internationally. While living in Canton while
her husband was posted to St. Lawrence’s ROTC
detachment, she received her degree in sociol-
ogy from St. Lawrence. After retirement from the
Army, they returned to Norwich. She is survived
by her husband and a niece and nephews.
2007
Brian J. Hanson
died unexpectedly
on February 9, 2012, in Essex Junction, Vt. He
majored in geology and was a member of the
Geology Club. He was a member of the men’s
rugby team, serving as president his senior year.
He also travelled to Curacao to conduct under-
graduate geology research. Most recently he was
employed by The Edge Sports and Fitness Center
in Burlington, Vt.
