Answer
Among several native
names, perhaps the most well known
is the Mohawk
Kaniatarowanenneh
,
which means, most appropriately,
“big waterway.” While Cartier was
party to the Eurocentrism that
characterized the Age of Exploration
in callously imposing a new name, we
can perhaps be relieved that we are not
Kaniatarowanenneh University. For
more, go to www.wampumchronicles.
com/kaniatarowanenneh.html.
Cartier, incidentally, chose
“St. Lawrence” because he arrived at the
river’s mouth on that saint’s feast day
(August 10) on the Roman Catholic
ecclesiastical calendar.
