Philosophy
Douglas
Carmichael
passed away
on March 26, 2012. A
graduate of Bowdoin Col-
lege in 1946, he earned
his M.A. from Harvard
and Ph.D. in philosophy
from Indiana University.
He taught philosophy
at St. Lawrence from
1958 to 1984, serving as
chair of the department
for many years. He wrote a number of scholarly
articles, including a translation of the Italian phi-
losopher Pico della Mirandola's
On the Dignity of
Man
, some short stories, and, out of his love of
Arthurian legend, an historical novel,
Pendragon
(1977). After retiring, hemoved toMaine and trav-
eled extensively.
Calvin Denho
died on February 11, 2012. He
worked full-time at Brewer Bookstore from 1985
to 2002, then shifted to part-time status in the
bookstore so as to work part-time in Owen D.
Young Library. From 2006 to 2008, he worked
full-time in the library. “His remarkable memory
and skill with people made Cal an icon at the
University,” said Kathryn L. Mullaney, St. Law-
rence vice president for nance and treasurer, in a
campus announcement. “He greeted everyone by
name, and, in his work at the Caribou Café, knew
everyone’s favorite co ee beverage. His pride in
his St. Lawrence a liation brought smiles to us
all.”

Father
Harry E. Giroux
passed away on Febru-
ary 13, 2012. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1976,
he was pastor of St. Thomas More Campus Parish
in Canton from 1985 to 2000, serving the cam-
puses of both St. Lawrence and SUNY Canton. He
taught college courses, facilitated the Big Broth-
er/Big Sister Program, was the advisor to several
fraternities and assisted with a variety of services
and programs on both campuses.

of the passing of Laurentians if we receive the informa-
tion from a family member or friend in the form of a pre-
viously published notice (typically from a newspaper).
