Coming Home
Alumni Who Have Returned to Canton to
Live and Work
St. Lawrence was a natural choice for Lisa Francey ’92,
who grew up in nearby Lisbon, N.Y., and had been riding at
the University stables since she was 10. Coming from a small high school, she
found at St. Lawrence what she calls “a new way of learning.”
A speech
and theatre major, Francey later earned her Doctor
of Chiropractic from New York Chiropractic College. She established
her practice in New York City and after the attacks of September 11,
2001, spent time at Ground Zero giving chiropractic care to rescue
workers. She soon decided she was “ready to live somewhere
life is simple, where you can pay attention to the values
and day-to-day things that are important to you. In the city I felt
like a small fish in a big pond; I longed to be where my presence could
make a difference.”
Where was that? Canton, New York.
Making a Difference
Of her practice, Dr. Lisa Francey & Associates, which is within
walking distance of campus, she says, “We are striving to be
a center for holistic health therapy.” She has recruited two
other chiropractic doctors; a massage therapist and acupuncturist are
also on her staff. Each year one of her interns is a student
of Associate Professor of Sociology Patrice LeClerc.
Dr.
Francey has known many of her patients since her youth and can feel
the difference she makes in the community. She knows several other
couples who have moved back to the area because “it’s
a great place to raise children. People in Canton are
focusing on living an old-fashioned, wholesome way of life; they’re
interested in gardening, family ‘fun runs,’ potluck dinners,
choosing holistic health care and keeping life simple,” she says.
