Alumni Accomplishments

The New York Times has named Mark W. Herlyn ’79 vice president for advertising. He is responsible for managing The Times's advertising sales in technology, telecom, corporate, financial services, banks, financial/B2B, education and mass market retail. Herlyn has been with The Times since 1999. From 1984 to 1998 he held several positions at Golf Digest Information Systems, including director of sales, national advertising manager, and associate publisher of Tennis magazine, Cruising World and Sailing World magazines, and national travel and resort manager for Golf Digest. Prior to joining the Times Company he worked at the Golf Course Superintendents Association from 1981 to 1984, as a producer at "This Week in Baseball" in 1981 and as an English teacher and soccer coach at Christchurch School in Christchurch, Va., from 1979 to 1981.  He was an English major and soccer player at St. Lawrence.              

Lorrie Moore ’78 has been selected to receive the 18th annual PEN/Malamud Award.   Given annually since 1988 in honor of the late writer Bernard Malamud, the prestigious award recognizes a body of work which demonstrates excellence in the art of short fiction.  Moore’s fiction, reviews and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Harper’s, Best American Short Stories, The Yale Review, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and elsewhere.  She is the author of two novels and three collections of stories, the most recent of which, Birds of America, was a National Book Critics’ Circle Award Finalist and the winner of the Irish Times International Prize for Literature.  She has also edited several anthologies and written two children’s books.  In 2004 she was awarded the Rea Award for achievement in the short story.  She lives in Madison, Wis., where she teaches at the University of Wisconsin. She is one of several alumni scheduled to visit campus in 2005-06 as part of the University’s Writers Series.

Henry Scovel Stewart ’76 was sworn in as a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States on June 21, 2004.  The admission ceremony was held in the United States Supreme Court Chamber and was presided over by eight of the nine Justices of the Court, including the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.  A private reception was held following the ceremony in the Rehnquist Dining Room of the Court and was attended by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Stewart was admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia in 1979 and the Bar of the State of New York in 1982.  He is also admitted to practice before the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York. He is a director of the International Great Lakes Coalition and serves as a member of the International Joint Commission's Public Interest Advisory Group concerning the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Study. 

U.S. Trust has promoted Pamela L. Sweet ’95 to vice president in its Stamford, Conn., office.  She is responsible for the comprehensive wealth management of client relationships including portfolio construction and financial, estate and retirement planning.  Previously she was an assistant vice president and junior portfolio manager.  She joined U.S. Trust’s Investment Department in 1995, working closely with senior portfolio managers and performing specialized research for the firm’s chief investment officer.  A Phi Beta Kappa graduate, she received an MBA in finance and management from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 2001.  At press time she was scheduled to complete her designation as a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor at the Cannon Financial Institute’s Trust Schools in August.  An original member of U.S. Trust’s Volunteer Committee, she is responsible for spearheading the firm’s participation in the AmeriCares Homefront Day Program, and participates in multiple charitable events, including the MS Walk, the MS Bike Tour and the Bennett Cancer Run/Walk.  She resides in Darien, Conn.
