1956
Oreay R. Thompson
of stone Moun-
tain, ga., died on november 10, 2012. He was a
member of sigma chi, KsLU and r Otc . He played
football and majored in english. after serving in
the U.s. army for two years, he and his wife, Jane
Fippin t hompson ’55, moved to atlanta, where
he was personnel manager at r ich’s Department
store and then vice president at r ayloc Division of
genuine parts co. He is survived by his wife and
their three children and their families.
1957

Antoinette“Toni”Rossi Patten
of
sarasota, Fla., passed away onDecember 26, 2012.
she earned her B.s. from r ussell sage college in
1942.
she married paul e. patten M’48, who suc-
cessfully coached football and hockey teams from
1948
to 1955; he passed away in 1992. toni was
also preceded in death by her sisters Marie r ossi
r ichardson ’55 and sylvia r ossi p’82. Her brother-
in-law william H. r ichardson ’56 and niece teresa
r . r ossi ’82 survive her.
1957
Wesley G. Vanderhorst
of essex, n.y.,
passed away on December 7, 2012. He attended
cornell University on a football scholarship be-
fore joining the navy and serving two years on
the
U.S.S. Wisconsin
during the Koreanwar. He re-
turned to st. Lawrence to earn his degree in eco-
nomics. He was a member of alpha tau Omega
and the football, basketball and golf teams. He
married Jessie-Lue Futch ’57, who passed away
in 1998. wes had a 30-year career with new york
telephone and was an active civic leader in all of
the communities he lived in throughout his life.
His survivors include a daughter, Leisa vander-
horst Hill ’80, and son, gregory ’84.
1962
WilliamW. Spater
died on December
5, 2012,
at his home in tubac, ariz. He pledged
Beta t heta pi and skied on both the alpine and
nordic teams, earning the Mvp award for his
junior and senior years. He studied economics.
From 1962 to 1965, he was a lieutenant in the U.s.
navy, working as a demolitions expert. He had a
financial business, spater Mora Financial services,
andwas active in his community. in 1999, hemar-
ried susan Leedham Heavey ’65, who survives
him. t hose remembering him also include sister-
in-law tory Liersch spater somerville ’63.
1964
Susan Krafchuk McDermott
passed
away on December 22, 2012, at her home in
north carolina. she and her husband, peter, who
survives her, also resided in Bondville, vt. she
was a sister of pi Beta phi and made the Dean’s
List. she had retired as county director for Meals
onwheels.
1970
Christopher B. Unger
of new smyrna
Beach, Fla., passed away on January 3, 2012. Dur-
ing his time at st. Lawrence, he played football,
sang with the singing saints and was a member
of r Otc . He earned his B.s. in psychology and a
ph.D. in education and psychology from the Uni-
versity of Michigan. an authority in the field of
child welfare, in which he was a consultant, he is
survived by his wife, nancy sage Unger ’70.
1974
Mary Glasson Thompson
of south-
bury, conn., died on October 7, 2012. she re-
ceived her B.s. in geology from st. Lawrence,
where she met her future husband, charles
“
todd” t hompson ’74. she enjoyed collecting
rocks and was active in her church. in addition to
her husband, survivors include her sons, will ’02n
and eric, and sister-in-law Kristin t hompson pat-
terson ’82, who is married to Bill patterson ’82.
1975
Christopher H. Martin
passed away
January 16, 2013, in new york city. He studied
history and then attended Fordham Law school.
He started his career at the Legal aid society of
newyork city and later moved on to the newyork
county Defender services. t hose preceding him
in death include his grandfather, Johnw. Hannon
1905;
his uncle, John w. Hannon Jr. ’44; and his
mother, Jean Hannon Martin ’45. He is survived
by his father, Bernard J. Martin ’45n; aunts, Marga-
ret Hannon crawley ’41, vivien gardner Hannon
’43
and patricia cross Hannon ’51; uncle, James K.
Hannon ’51; and niece, Jennifer padgett Orser ’92.
1978
David J. Parker
of Mount pleasant,
s.c., died on June 28, 2012. He played basketball
and majored in sociology at st. Lawrence. He
worked for manufacturing companies and later in
the building trades, specializing in historic resto-
rations. He was an avid outdoorsman and skilled
craftsman. t hose surviving him include his father,
r obert e. parker ’47, and son, r obert J. parker ’11.
1979

Barbara Barnes, “Kawehnehe,”
passed away on July 1, 2012, in Ottawa. Ont. she
worked in education for most of her career, as the
director of the native north american traveling
college and a teacher at iohahi:io, an adult educa-
tion center on cornwall island, Ont. she was also
the secretary for the Mohawk nation council of
chiefs and a Bear clan member. she sat on the
akwesasne Mohawk Board of education and the
iroquois nationals lacrosse team board.
1980
Dirk H. Van Dijk
of Dayton, Ohio,
passed away on april 7, 2012. He majored in
government and history and was inducted into pi
sigma alpha, the government honorary society.
He was also a member of alpha tau Omega. His
survivors include his three children and his moth-
er, Beverley Harper nalven ’55.
2005

Dain T. Venne
and two other U.s.
army r eserve soldiers were killed in an impro-
vised explosive device attack in afghanistan on
november 3, 2012. t he staff sergeant from port
Henry, n.y., withdrew from st. Lawrence to enlist
in the U.s. army shortly after the 9/11 terrorist at-
tacks in 2001. He had served a tour in iraq before
the current tour in afghanistan. For his life-saving
action in rescuing several stranded victims dur-
ing the august 2011 floods caused by Hurricane
irene, Dain received the Firefig ter commenda-
tion Medal from the port Henry Fire Department
in May 2012.
