faculty and Staff
associate professor emeritus of economics
David Vrooman
died on January 8, 2013. a fac-
ulty member for 34 years, he retired in 1999. He
taught microeconomics and financia economics,
and was the advisor to the investment club. in
1978-79,
he participated in the economic policy
Fellowship program at the Brookings institution
in washington, D.c. He published in numerous
professional journals, including the
American
Economist, the American Journal of Economics and
Sociology, Land Economics
and the
National Tax
Journal,
and offered guest lectures at north coun-
try regional economics and civic organizations.
Mary Jean Panella
,
emerita professor of social
work in the sociology department, passed away
on January 23, 2013. she came to st. Lawrence
in 1965 and taught for 25 years, retiring in 1990.
in addition to teaching courses in social welfare
topics, she was an early supporter of community-
based and experiential learning, sponsoring nu-
merous internships for students in the region’s
social welfare agencies. she also directed the Uni-
versity’s summer elderhostel program for many
years, as an extension of her research on issues
of aging.
Jane Eaton
,
who retired from st. Lawrence’s
Launders science Library in 2004 after a career
of 45 years and immeasurable influen e on gen-
erations of students, died on December 24, 2012.
after retirement, Jane served in a part-time posi-
tion, extending her contributions through five de-
cades. she created the original valentine r eading
r oom, which evolved into Launders. she was par-
ticularly attached to the generations of st. Law-
rence students who worked for her, many of them
from Kenya, and they responded by developing
equally strong attachments to her. she is survived
by emeritus professor of chemistry clarke gage,
three sons and three grandchildren.
Lucretia Leonard Romey
died on December
2, 2012,
in Orleans, Mass. t he wife of william D.
r omey, professor emeritus of geography, she
supervised student art teachers in st. Lawrence’s
graduate program and taught art courses at st.
Lawrence and other nearby colleges. she was a
painter, watercolorist, quilter, writer and teacher,
winning awards in major national art shows. she
helped co-found and run the canton gallery and
was active in the Unitarian Universalist church in
canton. she illustrated several books with north
country settings, and her “north country sketch-
book” appeared weekly in the
St. Lawrence Plain-
dealer.

There is also a St. Lawrence University
in Kampala, Uganda. It occupies 11
acres, which is 989 fewer than “ours”
has, and was founded in 2006, when
“
we” were 150 years old. It specializes in
information technology and industrial
art and design. Its initials are SLAU,
for reasons that are unclear, as are the
reasons why it chose its name.
St. Lawrence sometimes receives mail
intended for Sarah Lawrence Col-
lege and Lawrence University, both in
the U.S., and St. Lawrence College, a
secondary school just a few miles from
Canton in Cornwall, Ont.
