Eleanor Alexander Drake
of cape
coral, Fla., passed away on January 2, 2013. she
graduated from the University of r ochester, re-
ceived her master’s degree from sUny Brockport
and taught in the pittsford central school District
until she and her husband retired to Florida.

Carrol Stephen Walsh Jr.
passed
away on December 17, 2012 at his home in sara-
sota, Fla. He attended notre Dame and st. Law-
rence and served in world war ii, in armor in the
european t heatre. after graduating from albany
Law school in 1946, he established a law practice
in Johnstown, n.y. He was a new york state su-
preme court Justice, 1977-88.

Robert E. Ingmire
died on novem-
ber 4, 2012, in saratoga springs, n.y. at st. Law-
rence, he studied physics, pledged Beta t heta pi
and worked on
The Hill News
and
The Laurentian
Magazine.
after graduating from syracuse Univer-
sity, he had a 39-year career with general electric.
1948
Oscar R. Cochi
of webster, n.y., passed
away on October 20, 2012. He served in world
war ii as a captain in the air Force, stationed in
india. He pledged sigma alpha epsilon, earned
departmental honors in government and made
the Dean’s List at st. Lawrence. He received a
Moving-Up Day award, was tapped for Omicron
Delta Kappa, and was selected for

an outstanding football, basketball and base-
ball player, he was inducted into st. Lawrence’s
athletics Hall of Fame in 1989. a generous and
reliable supporter of his alma mater, he earned
his M.ed. in 1949 and was assistant coach of the

unbeaten football team before becoming a
longtime teacher, coach and administrator in the
webster (n.y.) school District. survivors include
his brother carl’52 and nephewMichael ’91.
1948
John S. Miller
of Lowville, n.y., died
on august 12, 2012. He was a member of Beta
t heta pi and a chapel bellringer, the beginning
of a family legacy of which he was proud. He
trained his late cousin, nathaniel B. Merrell ’51, to
ring; another cousin, charlie Merrell ’81 and char-
lie’s son, charles“alex”Merrell ’13, have continued
the tradition. after receiving a B.s. in chemistry,
Dr. Miller graduated from tufts University school
of Dental Medicine in 1952. He served in the U.s.
Merchant Marines at the end of world war ii and
the U.s. navy during the Korean war, assigned as
a dental officer to the U.s. Marine corps. Upon
returning from military service, he and his late
brother, edgar M. Miller ’46, practiced dentistry
for 50 years in Lowville. t hose remembering him
include his son, Jonathan w. Miller ’77; daughter,
ellen p. Miller ’80; cousin, edgar s.K. Merrell iii ’75;
niece, susan Banner greer ’77, p’12; and great-
niece, emily greer ’12.

DonaldT. O’Brien
of Queensbury, n.y.,
passed away on December 9, 2012. He saw active
service with the U.s. navy armed guard during
world war ii, after which he enrolled at st. Law-
rence to study history. He earned departmental
honors and was tapped for Omicron Delta Kappa.
a member of Beta t heta pi, he served on the in-
terFraternity council. He was on the gridiron
playing football and on the staff of the
Gridiron
,
the yearbook. He also participated in Mummers,
the L club, campus broadcasting, and the winter
carnival committee. He had a professional sales
career and was on the ski patrol at gore Moun-
tain. a dedicated alumnus, his estate will fund the
DonaldM. andMarionw. O’BrienMemorial schol-
arship, established in memory of his parents.
1949
Robert E. Pratt
of needham, Mass.,
died on november 19, 2012. after serving in the
U.s. navy in the philippines during world war ii,
he enrolled at st. Lawrence, where hewas a broth-
er of phi sigma Kappa and majored in mathemat-
ics. He continued his education at rpi and syra-
cuse University. He worked at iBM and general
electric before retiring from the Missile systems
Division of r aytheon. His survivors include his
wife, shirley winslow pratt ’50.

Joyce Kruger Ringo
of canton, n.y.,
passed away on november 29, 2012. she was a
sister of aDpi and its president in 1949. a biology
major, shewas inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the bi-
ology honorary society. sheworked for Hoffmann
Lar oche, inc., a pharmaceutical fi m in new Jersey,
and retired from canton Free Library in 1980.

Lois Clark Kitson
of new provi-
dence, n.J., died on December 31, 2012. at st.
Lawrence, she was on the Dean’s List, graduat-
ing with honors, and was a member of psi c hi,
the psychology honorary society. she pledged
aDpi sorority and was on

staff. she
started her career at new york telephone; after
her children were grown, she returned to work
and retired from at &t. t hose surviving her in-
clude her son Douglas r . Kitson ’87.
1953
Asher Atkinson
passed away on april
6, 2012,
at his home in steamboat springs, colo.
He was a member of sigma alpha epsilon and
received his B.s. in mathematics. He served in
the army, graduating from the army Language
school, where he learned to speak r ussian, and
had a long career in the oil and gas industry. sur-
vivors include his wife, Beryl everett atkinson ’56,
who he met on a ski hill while at st. Lawrence, and
their six children and 10 grandchildren, all who
acquired their love of skiing.

Alfred W. Bartlett
of camillus, n.y.,
passed away on January 19, 2013. He pledged
sigma alpha epsilon and, after graduating from
st. Lawrence, served in the army from 1953 to
1955.
He retired from the Onondaga county De-
partment of weights and Measures in 1994. He is
survived by his wife and their eight children, 23
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Sylvia Leary Small
of Melbourne,
Fla., died on July 15, 2012. Her husband, arthur r .
small ’51, who she met at st. Lawrence and mar-
ried in november of 1951, survives her.

Theda Hayes Consler
of tully, n.y.,
formerly of canton, passed away on October 4,
2012.
she graduated from Mount Holyoke col-
lege in 1938. after receiving her M.ed. from st.
Lawrence, she taught in the education depart-
ment before joining the faculty at canton Junior-
senior High school. she was preceded in death
by her husband, r obert e. consler, former chair
of st. Lawrence’s economics department and
comptroller of the University. she is survived by
her sons, Mark ’64 and John ’67, who is married to
sharon Bowers consler ’72. t he family funded the
consler scholarship endowment and two award
funds for students.

John R. “Jack” Patterson
of Highland
Lakes, n.J., passed away on september 27, 2012.
while at st. Lawrence, Jack joined sigma alpha
epsilon, r Otc and the Laurentian singers. He was
elected treasurer of t helmo and was tapped for
Omicron Delta Kappa. after he received his B.s.
in mathematics, he served in the U.s. army and
graduated from Harvard Business school. He had
a long career in the telecommunications indus-
try and was active in his community and church.

brother and sister-in-law, albert F. ’51 and Marilyn
schiemer patterson ‘49, and his wife’s parents, Lau-
rence e. ’29 and Margaret Hiller ’32 Hoyt. His sur-
vivors include his wife, nancy Hoyt patterson ’56.

Jack” O’Loughlin ’51
passed away peacefully
on January 26, 2013, with his family at his side,
in Pinehurst, North Carolina. he earned his
bachelor’s degree in economics and led the
saints football team to an undefeated season in
1950,
earning“t he Big 42”a place in the Athlet-
ics hall of f ame. he also played baseball, was on
the Board of Athletic Control and was a sports
reporter for
The Hill News.
A member of At O, he
was president of interf raternity Council and of
his junior class. he was elected to ODK.
Upon graduation, he
enlisted in the United
states Marine Corps,
where he rose to the
rank of captain. After
serving, he had an ex-
ceptional 32-year ca-
reer with the Allstate
insurance Company,
retiring
as
senior
executive vice presi-
dent.
Dedicated to provid-
ing opportunity for others, Jack gave graciously
of his time, talents and treasure to the people
and causes in which he believed. in addition to
his tenure as a trustee of st. Lawrence, he was
also an Alumni executive Council member and
Reunion volunteer. he served the UsMC schol-
arship f oundation andwas president of theMa-
rine Corps University f oundation.
Jack touched the lives of everyone hemet with
his twinkling eyes, warm smile and friendly de-
meanor. he is survived by his wife, Janet tag
O’Loughlin ’51, with whom he had shared class
reporting duties; four children, including Rob-
ert ’75 and Patricia Cameron ’79; 11 grandchil-
dren; and one great-grandchild.
