World-Class University
Tuoc Hong Phan ’07
Vietnam
Community-Minded
Some
people want to attend universities in large, busy cities, but
for Tuoc H. Phan ’07, the small-town environment is what
drew her to St. Lawrence.
Phan, an economics-mathematics major from Hue, Vietnam, heard
about St. Lawrence from friends and through searching in various
resources for schools. Immediately appreciative of the community
atmosphere, she says she liked how easy it was to get to know
people when she arrived on campus.
A resident of International House, Phan has been able to meet
and live with people of many cultures. “My friends [in
I-House] have influenced my educational goals, as well as my
personal character,” she says.
Phan will continue to experience more cultures this year.
She received a Japanese Language School Award from the Asian
Studies Initiative and will be in Japan over the summer.
“I believe the language will come in handy later,” she
says. “Plus, living with a local family will offer me
some good experiences as well as help me grow.”
Phan works at the circulation help desk in the Owen D. Young
Library on campus, as well as in the alumni and parent programs
and admissions offices. She is involved with the Investment
Club and has also been on the Dean’s List. She hopes
to obtain an internship in the future and go to graduate school
after St. Lawrence.
