Tuesday’s Child
Kwabena
Osei-Kusi ’05 comes from a culture in Ghana that names
people after the day on which they were born. Osei-Kusi was
born on a Tuesday. Where he is from, there are many Kwabenas,
he says, so coming to St. Lawrence was a nice change.
“I first heard about St. Lawrence from a college guidebook,” Osei-Kusi
says. “I liked how it was in a small town close to Canada,
so I could experience two countries and two cultures at once.” He
also liked the high portion of students who engage in international
study, saying that “people who go abroad have broader
minds about the world than people who do not.”
An international student, Osei-Kusi has also taken advantage
of the selection of international study programs at St. Lawrence.
He completed a semester in Japan, and he also received an Asian
Studies Initiative grant to return to Japan to further his
study in the Japanese language.
Osei-Kusi is an economics major with applied statistics and
mathematics minors. He is the president of the Investment Club,
which is “given” $30,000 of the University’s
endowment to invest. He plays intramural soccer and tried to
start a badminton club on campus. He also worked at the Owen
D. Young Library for a while as well.
When Osei-Kusi graduates, he is planning on working as an
analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston. “I have tried
to take advantage of all the opportunities here,” he
says. “Coming to St. Law-rence was the best decision
I ever made.”
