Proposed Wellness Center To Address the Whole Person

St. Lawrence students will one day have one place to go to seek advice on all aspects of their mental, physical and emotional well-being. Plans are under way to create a campus wellness center, which would merge counseling services and the current health center into a cooperative venture in one building, according to Susan Lapierre, nurse director of Winning Health Center. The wellness center, she explained, will serve as a place to educate students on healthy practices such as nutrition, sleep and stress management, and also on the dangers of matters such as alcohol abuse, smoking and tanning.

"We can offer classes, videos, computer site information and one-on-one counseling, both by professionals and by peers," Lapierre said. "At a wellness center, students can learn about many different topics and see how they are interrelated."

"We hope that a wellness center will allow us to be more proactive on campus in preventing problems before they happen," commented William Burns, director of counseling services.

The location of the new center has not been determined, nor has a date for breaking ground. Construction will likely follow the building of the planned new student center (see related story).

"I'm looking forward to having this center," said Burns. "The combining of health services and counseling services has been a successful trend nationally on small campuses and I am sure it will be successful here too." --Katherine Elliott '01
