It was a reunion of a different sort last December when Marion "Gaither" Galleher Kyhos '77 and her family welcomed her Kenyan host family from 1975 at the Kyhos home in Bethesda, Md. From left are Edna Ambundo; the Kyhos family, including husband Tom and children Justin, Patrick and Jennifer; and Sam and Bertha Ambundo. "Edna was 3 years old when I lived with the Ambundos," says Marion; "she just received her Ph.D. and is working at MIT. It was a terrific reunion!"
Timothy Fitzgerald '90 has been elected a partner in the Rochester, N.Y., law firm Harris Beach LLP, effective January 1, 2001. He practices in the firm's Commercial Real Estate Development and Finance Practice Group. He earned his law degree at Albany Law School of Union University and joined Harris Beach in 1995. He and his wife, Carol Calcagni Fitzgerald '90, live in Rochester.
Peter Rutkoff '64 has been named professor and director of American studies at Kenyon College, where he has been a faculty member for 30 years. A professor of history, he is also director of Kenyon's School-College Articulation Program, thorugh which high schools offer courses, taught by their own teachers with guidance from Kenyon mentors, to more than 1,000 students for college credit. He has received many honors, including Ohio Professor of the Year in 1993, and, with a Kenyon colleague, held a National Endowment for the Humanities Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1997-2000. He is the co-author of two scholarly books (see "Laurentian Reviews" in this issue of St. Lawrence), sole author of one, and the author of a forthcoming novel.
In her first bid for elective office, Donna Siwek '83 has been elected a New York State Supreme Court Justice for the Eighth Judicial District, which comprises the eight westernmost counties of New York State. At her swearing-in on January 4, she became the youngest person elected a justice in the district's history. A Buffalo attorney and cum laude graduate of St. Lawrence, she earned her law degree at the University of Buffalo Law School. She and her husband, bank attorney Tim McEvoy, live in North Buffalo with their children Conor, 7, and Emma, 5.
After a day of skiing, this throng of alumni unfurled the St. Lawrence banner at the base of the Copper Mountain slopes during last March's alumni ski outing are there. Thanks to Mary Ann Fitzpatrick Griffin '57 for submitting the photo.
Several cross country Laurentians got together at last fall's NCAA Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championship meet at the University of Rochester, to cheer the current men's and women's teams on to qualification for the national championships the following week. The Joseph M. Fine III Memorial ScholarshipIn January 2000, Joseph Fine '87 died in a traffic accident. He left his wife, Kim, and a 2-year-old son, Declan, as well as many Laurentian friends.
To honor Joe, two of his classmates have established the Joseph M. Fine III Memorial Scholarship at St. Lawrence in his memory. Proceeds from the scholarship endowment will be awarded annually to a deserving and needy student.
