Student Center Plans Continue to Evolve

A new student center for St. Lawrence has been evolving on the drawing boards for some time now, and steps are in place that will assure its eventual completion, according to Vice President for Administrative Operations Thomas Coakley. The $15 million proposed center is still in the funding stages, after which several months of planning and two years of construction will be required before it will open, Coakley explained.

The 55,000-square-foot center is to be built "right in the middle of campus," according to Student Activities Director Anne Townsend. Plans call for construction on a site roughly bounded by Dana Dining Hall, Rebert Hall and Madill Hall that boasts proximity to most of the University's residence halls and classroom buildings, and to Brewer Bookstore.

Central to the building will be a "student entertainment theatre," while Gulick Theatre will continue to serve the speech and theatre department and other academic functions. The new theatre will have flexible seating adaptable for watching a movie, listening to a lecture or partaking of other types of events, according to Townsend. Another key component will be a food court, she said.

One of the main purposes of the new building will be to consolidate different aspects of student life into one central location, Townsend explained. She said the center is being designed to encourage organizations and departments to collaborate and share ideas and resources. Among functions that will be consolidated in the building, if current thinking materializes, will be those of the vice president of student life and co-curricular education, career planning, Thelmo, and student organizations such as The Hill News, the Gridiron and KSLU. --Katie Volpe '01
