in Jecheon, Korea (two hours south of Seoul), at
Eastern English Academy. The kids can be really
fun! It’s rewarding to see their English language
skills progress. I will definitely miss them when I
have to say goodbye in the fall; I have gotten really
attached to them! I had four weeks off between
my first- and second-year contracts, so Dorrie and
I backpacked Southeast Asia, and when Dorrie and
I finish at the end of October we’re planning an-
other backpacking excursion, hopefully to India.”
Hai-Yen Nguyen
, a master’s degree candi-
date at Queens University in Canada, returned to
campus in March for a talk that focused on the
interface between science and art. A double ma-

used in medicine and their application to art con-

Thanks for all of your news. I hope to hear from
more of you soon!

Hello to all my fellow graduates! For those of you
who don’t know me, I was an English (writing) ma-
jor and a University communications intern, and
served on the editorial boards for two University-
published journals, sponsored by the English and
PCA departments. I was also active in SLUAct!
and the reading and math tutor program, and this
fall I am attending Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.,
working toward a master’s degree in sport admin-
istration.
For future alumni publications I will be serving as
our class reporter. So, if you have news about an
exciting new job or move, if you’re walking down
the aisle to married life, or are about to welcome
a little Laurentian of your own, let me know (and
send pictures)! Because as President Fox made
clear in his Commencement speech, our class was
headed in all different directions after leaving St.
Lawrence. Though some of us may still be self-
declared ski-bums, or are in our first semesters of
graduate, law, veterinary or medical schools, many
of our classmates already have one foot in the
door of the working world and are well on their
way to successful careers.
I’ve been in touch with
Heather Bell
, who
has been working as a wildlife rehabilitator at the
Florida KeysWild Bird Center inTavernier, Fla.The
center consists of both a hospital and a sanctu-
ary where Heather and her colleagues have been
working to not only rehabilitate sick and injured
birds, but also educate others in hopes of reducing
the birds’ suffering.
For all you X-Games fans, I’m excited to report
that this year’s events were produced with the
help of
Nicolien Bongaerts
.Nikki is a member
of the event production department at the Bristol,
Conn., headquarters of ESPN. She’s spending the
fall planning NCAA football events and hopes to
be promoted to a full-time position this winter.
Pursuing his own sports career, former men’s
hockey captain
Aaron Bogosian
is skating with
the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey
League. He signed a one-year, one-way contract
last spring after playing 10 games with the Falcons
before injuring his ankle and ending his season.
Several 2011 alumni are pursuing teaching careers
both in the U.S. and abroad.
Jimmy Mayers
is
teaching English in Mississippi.
Melissa Rogers,
Patrick Dodds
and
Lisa VanderVoort
are
teaching math in Miami, Mississippi and Chicago,
respectively.
Whitney Koch
has also settled in
Mississippi, as a biology teacher, and three Lauren-
tians,
Megan Gallagher, Jessica Richards
and
Kayla Abeling
, are all working at the New
England Center for Children.
While some of us enter the working world, oth-
ers begin their married lives.
Kasey Dubay
contacted me shortly after graduation to let me
know she married U.S.Army Specialist David Clark
on May 28.
Samantha Deon
married Corey
Morehouse at Gunnison Memorial Chapel July 23
with bridesmaids
Andrea Dore
and
Kailey
Pestka
by her side.
Emily Moquin
got engaged to boyfriend
George Mullikin last Christmas. The couple plans
to marry in July of next year. She is currently the
graduate assistant for the education department.
At press time we learned that
Lauren Reed
is
a history teaching intern for the 2011-2012 year at
the Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y. She is also
doing some coaching and helping Kent Jones ’72
in college counseling. This is an example of the
SLU network at work; Jones met Lauren during
ReunionWeekend in June and persuaded his dean
of faculty to interview her. Presumably the head
of school had a hand in the hiring too; that’s Trudy
Hall ’77.
It’s strange not seeing you all around campus this
fall, but the best way to stay connected to SLU
and each other is to keep the news coming! Best
of luck!
