vacationing with his family in Vermont.
“An ever-present icon among Laurentians
and North Country citizens, a man for all
seasons, felds and waters” in the words of
President Fox in a campus announcement
of his passing, he was 87 and had been a
member of the Laurentian community since
joining the faculty in 1965.
“Generations of students honor John
Green as an inspiration who helped
establish, with Professor Al Schwartz, our
environmental studies program,” President Fox continued. “John brought his contagious
love of nature and the outdoors to his scholarship and teaching; he trekked his students
near and far to study fora and fauna, especially the Eastern coyote, a special topic of his
research.” Also a botanist who taught pioneering courses in ecology, he was also an enthu-
siastic advisor to the Outing Club.
A graduate of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science
and Forestry, Professor Green earned his master’s degree from Syracuse University and
his doctorate from Cornell University. He was a Marine Corps veteran. Afer retiring
in 1989, he continued his lifetime passion for teaching by leading nature walks during
Reunion and hikes with outdoor organizations, speaking to community groups, visiting
classes on campus, and providing advice to local gardeners and landscapers. Many are the
alumni who regularly commented on how his teaching, both during and afer college,
infuenced their career and life choices.

Jo-Anne Green Hawkins ’88.
