great ice cream? It was on Park

Street, next to the Canton Library,

which was next to the Post Office

on the corner. Across the corner

was the Sugar Bowl, a great hang-

out after shopping at the Bing

Stevens Store for anything from a

pencil to a sweatshirt with an SLU

logo. On Main Street were a cloth-

ing store, a bank, the Barr Phar-

macy, the California Fruit Store,

Peggs’s Jewelry Store, Ann's Dress

Shop and then the

Plaindealer

,

which printed the

Scarlet Saint

along with the weekly Canton

paper. Newberry's five-and-dime

was next and then, in later years,

a liquor store on the corner. Jim's

Grill was around the corner.

Across the street were a shoe

store and then Crump’s, where lots

of beer was available, along with

pickled eggs. At the end of the

street was Kaplan's Department

Store. Back near the Sugar Bowl

corner, there was Ike Noble's shoe

store and then one of the most

popular "dating places," the fa-

mous "R." Remember the slanting

floor? I think beer was ten cents a

glass -- is that true?

On the other side of Main Street,

next to the Post Office, was the

movie theater! Then Billy's, a

restaurant, another bank, and the

Commercial Advertiser

, which

printed our

Hill News

. Next were

the Canton Diner and then the

Town Hall. At the end of the street

was the Harrington Hotel, and

across the river there was a path

to Bullis’s Hill, where one could go

"mini" skiing. The Model Steam

Laundry, where many of us had

our laundry delivered, was around

the corner.

Only a couple of these remain. I

hope that this brings back memo-

Laurentians. Some 25 family

members, some currently enrolled,

have association with St. Lawrence.

Recently I had a very nice tele-

phone conversation with Walt

Hluch ’47 (Navy), who has had

some problems with his back. He

turned 91 and regrets not walking

with his wife, Peggy, who does a

two-mile hike every day. Good for

you, Peggy.

I also talked with Art Hilkert

’47 (Navy), who had been in

the hospital but was home and

doing well. It's so good to talk

about "old times" at SLU. Those

40-below-zero temperatures we

had are great conversation topics!

Paul Durkin

and Bell Herndon

’47 continue to email in the "Navy

Loop," which is always fun to read.

she volunteered for the Fairfax

Hospital and St. Mary's Episcopal

Church. Our condolences to her

The University has learned that

Gil Maurer

was honored at the

New York Botanical Garden’s 33rd

Annual Founders Award Dinner in

May. The Hearst Corp. director has

served on the garden’s board for

almost 30 years. He accepted the

honor for the company’s support

of the garden’s green initiatives.

“Hearst’s relationship with the

New York Botanical Garden goes

back a long way,” Gil said. “Hearst

Corp. and the Hearst Foundations

have been an investor and part-

ner of the garden for decades.

We bring shared values to the

task: education, preservation,

conservation. And, perhaps most

important, a deep appreciation of

beauty and wonder.”

died on April 22, 2014.

She had been an administra-

Health Department in Southbury,

Conn. I remember her in tennis

gym class and playing bridge

on the floor in the Kappa lodge.

Best of all, when I drove her up

to a St. Lawrence reunion and on

a trip to Florida, I talked her into

going to her high school reunion

(Roosevelt in Yonkers, N.Y.), where

she reunited with her prom date,

George Smith. They happily

married, and she brought him to

a St. Lawrence reunion, and we

were all so happy for them. She

had three children: John, Susan

Karen Pflugheber Gunnison

died on May 20. Her obituary is

in the "In Memory" section of

this magazine.

Do you remember the young

physical education teacher who

came to SLU when we were soph-

omores or juniors? Jean DeLand

stayed in Canton for many years

after she married John Hardy, an

optometrist. She and I crossed

paths several times. She and

"Jack" moved to Saranac Lake in

2001, and I then had the opportu-

nity to hike and cross-country ski

with my former "phys ed" teacher.

Jean died on May 27.

there should be lots of good news

out there! Send me some for the

I called

John Youker

to see if he

and Barbara were planning to be

in Canton for our 60th reunion,

and John led me through a

delightful afternoon at the Youker

home in South Glens Falls as we

watched videos of the Youker

travels. Barbara and John started

their amazing journeys after they

both retired from teaching and

their children had begun their

own careers. Travel experiences

within the continental U.S. led to

the European river tours, which

John admits did not “reach the

promise of the ads.” At this junc-

ture, Overseas Adventures Travel

(OAT), dedicated to educational

experiences in groups of 16, came

to John’s notice. Through OAT,

they have reached 47 foreign

lands in addition to most of the

U.S. They began with the Greek

Islands. A sampling of other

adventures includes Scandinavia,

England, Russia, Africa, Macchu

Pichu, Tibet and Honduras.

The video I found so enthrall-

ing was of a 16-day journey to

the southernmost tip of South

America, including Easter Island,

Rio de Janeiro, Patagonia and

Tierra del Fuego.

Reunion 2014 was another large

success thanks to hard-working

staff who plan it, push it and

proudly show off our campus

in transition. It’s tough enough

to handle 1,200 people, but the
