Next Reunion: 45

th

, 2018

(Cluster with '72, '73)

Our 40th reunion was GREAT! The

weather was spectacular, and 75

people, including class members,

spouses and friends, attended.

For seven classmates, it was their

first reunion. Two traveled long

distances:

Haruyoshi Udagawa

from Japan and

Robert Tippin

and his wife, Robin, from Australia.

Many of us stayed in Gaines Col-

lege (we knew this as East Hall)

and had a wonderful time remi-

niscing in the common room and

looking at pictures in yearbooks

and “pig book.”

Our reunion class broke several

fundraising records—we raised

$920,323 (from 192 classmates)

which more than quadrupled our

previous record, and we were

awarded the Saints class gift

award and the Manley Society

class award.

On Friday, in front of Jencks Hall,

we held a tree dedication

settle in while also getting ready

for a vacation trip to Peru and

Ecuador—life is never simple!

Sue Ellis

emailed, “I love reading

about others in our class. I moved

to Maine shortly after graduating,

worked on schooners in Penob-

scot Bay for a few years, helped

found the local food co-op store

and ran it for eight years, then

started Coastal Documentation,

which works with boat owners

to document their boats with the

U.S. Coast Guard. In 1989, I married

Duke, and we have three kids, all

grown now at ages 22, 23 and

31, as well as two grandchildren. I

volunteer with a youth mentoring

non-profit, Trekkers, in my county;

with the town of St. George, where

I live; and with the Cooperative

Fund of New England, where

I serve as treasurer and on the

loan and executive committees.

Duke and I live a pastoral life that

includes horses, chickens and a

big garden. I love the gardening in

summer and a bit of traveling in

winter, now that the children are

all through college. We work hard,

play hard and live the life of Riley

every day.”

I wish I had more news to share,

but unless there’s a big back-

log that the post office hasn’t

forwarded to me yet (wishful

thinking…..), that’s it. Please write,

email, phone, stop by – we want to

hear from you!

is through my son, Scott

Hamlin ’93. You will remember him

as that cute little baby boy who

hung out with me in the UC circa

1971-72. This year he turned 43. He

and his wife, Cathy Quinn ’91, are

the parents of my oldest grand-

son, Evan, who is 13(!). It's pretty

amazing when all one's children

are 40+ and my granddaughters

(9 and 10) are my co-Taylor Swift

fans.” Erni is still teaching at Cape

Cod Academy and thoroughly

enjoys living on the Cape. She

and husband Daryl will celebrate

their 30th wedding anniversary

next year.

Life here in Northern Virginia has

been quite busy, what with mov-

ing my 88-year-old mother here

from Woodstock, N.Y., witnessing

daughter Molly’s graduation from

Syracuse University on Mother’s

Day, driving to Kiawah Island, S.C.,

in late May for a family vacation

and then to Queens in early June

to help move Molly into her first

apartment, and flying to Colorado

in mid-June to deliver Mom to my

sister for a few months. Whew!

Glad I’m not 64 (yet). “Send me a

postcard, drop me a line, stating

point of view. Indicate precisely

what you mean to say, yours

sincerely, wasting away. Give me

your answer, fill in a form, mine

for evermore. Will you still need

me, will you still feed me, when

I’m 64...?”

tI’m surrounded by what seems

like hundreds of mover boxes

and am facing the grim reality of

downsizing – where am I going to

put everything??? I’m now back

in the Northeast (new address

above), trying to unpack and

Grant

and

Ed Dick

. Apparently,

they are all making plans to spend

a good chunk of the winter on the

west coast of Florida. Kevin and

Jane’s son, Thomas, is a student

at The George Washington

University and in conjunction with

his global health policy major has

studied in Switzerland, Morocco

and Senegal.

Peter “Boomer” Brennan

has certainly managed to stay

in touch with his SLU hockey

buddies. He and

Tim Pelyk

meet

regularly for local hockey games

(Boomer’s son Tiger is a partici-

pant), he keeps

John

Hutzenlaub

in the loop as much

as possible, and he resends emails

to me from

Mike Keenan

’s

assistant coach in Russia. Mike

texted me to say he was thrilled

to be asked to do the commen-

tary for MSG-TV coverage of this

year’s Stanley Cup Finals between

the New York Rangers and the

L.A. Kings. Mike coached the 1994

Rangers to their first Stanley Cup

in over 40 years, and was in New

York City in June for a 20th anni-

versary celebration with the team.

Mike Flanigan

and Anna missed

most of the horrendous winter

weather last year by spending it

at their place in Florida. Likewise,

Holley Onion

and

Terry Moran

have a summer place that Terry

built on a Vermont lake property.

They are both well and enjoying

their two grandchildren. Who says

hockey players aren’t smart?

After receiving the spring 2014

issue of this magazine,

Erni

Williams Johnson

wrote to ask

me to identify the Kappas who

were featured in a photo. She has

fond memories of many from our

first year on campus. You might

remember she was married to

Paul Hamlin ’70 before graduat-

ing. She still sees Paul regularly

as they share three of her five

grandchildren.

She wrote, “I communicate at

Christmas with

Kathy Ertell

and

Cindy Winans Kamsler

, so I

hear about their Pi Phi network

too.

Leigh Dibble Desens

has a

house in Orleans, where I went to

a Pi Phi gathering a few years ago,

but not since. My primary SLU

connection in ‘recent’ years

LLP’s Milwaukee office and is also

a resident of Milwaukee.

So that your classmates can learn

what you've been up to, please

send me your news.

“Will you still be sending me a

Valentine, birthday greetings,

bottle of wine? If I stayed out till

quarter to three, would you lock

the door? Will you still need me,

will you still feed me, when I’m

64?” Surely, all of us remember

these famous lyrics; they seemed

so comical way back when they

were written. Not so funny now,

eh? I’ve received lots of news

from a whole bunch of 64-year-

olds; here’s to all of you!

Paul Patrick

sent word that all

those years of listening to his

son’s band (he’s the drummer)

in the basement have finally paid

off. “Young Rising Sons” have just

signed a record contract and have

a very catchy video on YouTube.

You can check out the song at

www.youngrisingsons.com.

Another proud Papa is

Preston

Smith

, who watched his son

Derek graduate from Yale Univer-

sity in the spring. Preston chose

to stay on campus to take in all

the tradition that an Ivy League

school evokes. He remarked that

the last time he had stayed in a

dorm room was sophomore year

in Rebert Hall, when his neighbor

was the late

Chet Baltz

. (“Makes

me a little sad and a little happy

thinking about him….”)

Jane Terrell ’73 and

Kevin Barry

sent word that they are now full-

time at their Scraggy Neck, Cape

Cod, home. They had a wonderful

mini-reunion with David ’71 and

Joyce DeRosa Kay

and

Dale

many stories around the campfire.

The "Usual Suspects" gathered

to celebrate, not having seen one

another in a while, our 66th birth-

days. (Who remembers?) This

year's venue was Rangeley Lake

in Maine.

Jeff Kellogg

is about

to retire,

Randy Bobb

is easing

into it, and Keith Besse '69 and

Dave Beisler '69 both asked "what

are you waiting for?"

In a recent email,

Bill Hayman

reported, "life is good." A life-long

skier, Bill once taught skiing at the

Snow Bowl. Upon retirement after

37 years with Nationwide Insur-

ance, he is again teaching, now at

Jay Peak in Vermont, this time as a

certified instructor. "My encore ca-

reer, teaching skiers, has brought

my life full circle," he said. Bill's

wife, Chrystal M'74, also recently

retired after 26 years teaching

middle school physical education

in Potsdam. He and Chrystal now

spend most of their time between

Potsdam and Jay Peak when not

visiting their kids and grandchil-

dren in Minnesota and Florida.

It was great to hear from Perry

Vockrodt ’72, who noted that he

has stayed in close contact with

Marty Buckoski

since gradua-

tion. The most significant news of

his recent past is his son's wed-

ding in Prague, Czech Republic, in

2013. While attending a ceremony

in New York City honoring World

War II Navy veterans, he stayed

with his old roommate

Jim

Benedict

, and then visited Jim's

camp in Norwich, N.Y. He also

sees

Mark Witman

, and had re-

cently made contact with Dennis

Szymanski '70 regarding another

Navy veterans’ event.

Chambers USA: America’s Lead-

ing Lawyers for Business

has

ranked

Michael W. Hatch

as a

leading lawyer in his field in 2014.

Hatch specializes in real estate law.

He is a partner at Foley & Lardner,

Pfeilsticker hosted

Wendy Van

Romer Dunster, Al

and

Sue

Gemberling Olszewski

and

St. Lawrence Trustee

Tom

and

Connie Harris Saddlemire

.

Heidi writes, "Dinner was served

on a set of St. Lawrence University

plates given to Heidi by

John

Finley

at a previous reunion." She

added, "For two years, Tom waited

for this reunion so he could display

his custom powder skis inscribed

with ‘Snow Bowl, St. Lawrence

University,’ the SLU shield, his

name and ski specs. Of course,

they were scarlet and brown!”

Jan Hunt Williams

and

Chris

Brandy

also represent us on the

Alumni Council. Chris, in turn, rep-

resented the council at a February

Laurentians-in-Residence event

on campus, including a dinner and

panel of alumni sharing their ca-

reer experiences and advice with

students. Jan can tell you more

about the Alumni Council and its

work:

williamsjh48@gmail.com

.

Andy Kaye

returned to the San

Francisco area from a golf trip to

Hilton Head Island via Northern

Virginia. Andy and Janet's kids

are very active in high school and

AAU sports in Alamo, Calif., Justin

in basketball and Emily in softball

and cross country. College visits

were to be an important part of

the summer vacation.

Rick Lajeskie

, still hard at work

(?!) at Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical

Inc., was also in the D.C. Metro

area picking up daughter Allison

after her third year at American

University. Kathy and I check in

on Allison for the Lajeskies, and

it seems like only yesterday that

she returned from a semester in

South Africa, at the University of

Cape Town. Rick and Steph did

manage to visit her and found

roughing it with "only Four Star"

lodging to be the substance of

Alumni Executive Council

member

Bob Rood

wrote that

the council is always looking for

alums to become involved. You

can contact Bob or me, and I will

relay the message to him, if you

are interested in being nominated

for council membership.

The last news to report, unfor-

tunately, is the loss of a class

member,

Margaret “Meg”

Yandon White

, who died in

March.

Susan Jenkins Selcke

was in contact with her for many

years. They were part of that very

small first Junior Year Abroad

program in Spain, in 1967-68.

Others were

Janet Kellock

Russell, Betsy Bramley

Cirelli, Jean Dygert, Janet

Kelly Gummere, Judy

Mishkin Miller, Bruce Weiss

and

Paul Barker

.

We send our condolences; for

more on Meg, see “In Memory.”

Sue Knauerhase Riley

wrote, “I

visited

Abbie Gardner

at her home in

Rowayton, Conn. Nancy Perro

Murgalo came to visit as she lives

nearby." They had a wonderful

time catching up on over 40 years

of news. Sue later saw Nancy

at a Starbuck’s (where else?) in

Manhattan, where Nancy works

in human resources, training new

managers.

Sue also found her way down

to Florida to visit

Helen Frank

Ross-Pollock

and Al Pollock '68

in Sarasota. They raised a glass, or

more, celebrating their success as

a team selling real estate on Anna

Maria Island, just north of Sarasota.

Helen is promoting our 45th re-

union next year!

Frequent contributor and Alumni

Council member

Heidi Hansen

came through with news of the

Class of 1970 mini-reunion in

Vail, Col. Heidi and husband Jack

During Reunion Weekend observances of the 50th anniversary of the France

Program, one of its directors, Emeritus Professor of French Edward Pierce, center,

reminisced with several alumnae who were on the program during his first tour as

director, 1974-76. From left are

Patricia “Tish” Silcox Munt ’77, Martha Nielsen ’76,

Karin Washburn Henry ’76, Diane Doty ’76

and

Linda Carbone ’78

. Professor Pierce

also directed the program in 1980-81, 1986-88 and 1995-97. During the summer of

1997, he established the program study tour in Dakar, Sénégal.
