Student Initiative

It isn't just faculty who organize international learning experiences at St. Lawrence; sometimes the students do it themselves. Leah Krieger '03, Carbondale, Col., began organizing such an experience during her freshman year. "Professors from history, government and religious studies gave their time to help us with preparations," said Krieger, and Thelmo helped with expenses. Over the January 2001 break, she led a group of six other students on a 14-day cultural and adventure trip to the fascinating island of Bali in the South Pacific.

In Bali in January 2001, the St. Lawrence party learns a traditional dance. In the left row from back to front are Mike Heintzelman '01, Aurora, Ohio; Molly Baker '04, Addison, Vt.; and Allison Blehet, daughter of trip guide Debra Blehet. On the right, back to front, are Leah Krieger '03, Carbondale, Col., trip organizer and leader; Renee Ciulla '03, Weare, N.H.; Stephanie "Sunny" Jenkins '04, Sterlington, N.Y.; and Megan Mack '04, Yardley, Pa.
