provides Medicare counseling to seniors. For fun
they spend their time with summer and winter
outdoor recreation, painting and drawing, and en-
joying their grandsons, who live right next door!
Julian Bergman
passed along good news of
the birth of twin grandsons on tax day, April 15.
He and Marcia had a fun but hectic summer with
their two daughters and four grandchildren living
within seven miles.
I’m sure many of you have tales to tell from Hur-
ricane Season.
Joan Friedlander Hurley
and
husband Jack were on the East Coast for two
weeks in August, visiting friends (including
Jean
Baltz Rose
in Schenectady, N.Y.), and celebrat-
ing a reunion with Jack’s family in Virginia Beach,
Va. Coming from Agoura in Southern California,
they were accustomed to earthquakes, but were
surprised to experience one on the East Coast!

As much as I enjoy writing this column, it is al-
ways a somber moment when I have to tell you
of a classmate’s passing. This time there are two
to report.
I received a call fromWendy Bidle to tell me of
husband
Jeff Bidle
’s death on May 22, 2011, six
days after his 66th birthday. Jeff was diagnosed
with Stage 4 lung cancer; 10 months later it had
spread to the bone. He was a member of SAE and
played hockey and baseball at St. Lawrence. After
graduation, Jeff worked 43 years in sales for Arm-
strongWorld Industries until he retired on January
1, 2011, in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Jeff is survived
by Wendy, their daughter Jennifer, son Jason and
grandson Marcus Jeffrey.
Gary Kaufmann
emailed the news that
Lar-
ry Witte
passed away July 1, 2011, in Sarasota,
Fla., after battling a cancer/kidney disorder. Larry
was a psychology major and a member of Sigma
Pi fraternity. After graduation, Larry attended
Columbia University and received a Master’s in
Hospital Administration. He spent most of his ca-
reer as a hospital administrator in Poughkeepsie,
N.Y. Larry is survived by his long-time companion,
Nancy Baird, and his sons Darren and ToddWitte
and their families. Memorial contributions may be
made to the American Cancer Society.

Next Reunion: 45th, May 31-June 3,
2012 (cluster with ’66, ’67)
I hope you are making plans to attend our next
Reunion, May 31-June 3. Check it out on the SLU
website.
My aging class secretary’s heart thumped with
happiness as I received three long emails from
various classmates.
Linda Beach Richardson
wrote one of those “43-year-capsules.” In a nut-
shell, she went to grad school at Indiana Univer-
sity; had deanships; spent 15 years as staff in the
United States Senate (12 of which were on the
Senate Committee on Appropriations where she

staff member” on the Committee) and 15 more
years at the Department of the Interior, 13 as a
member of the senior executive service.
After retiring in 2002, Linda and husband (of 36
years) Preston moved to the Eastern Shore of Vir-
ginia on a creek near Chesapeake Bay. But she

teer and as an administrative director. She and her
co-director were recognized in 2010 as directors
of the year by the Virginia
Literacy Foundation. She
is pictured at the recogni-
tion ceremonies with Dr.
Mark Emblidge, executive
director of the founda-
tion.
Linda still plays bridge
(a lot!), enjoys her grand-
daughter and lives not too far from her daughter
Kimberly.
The second email came from
Betty Jo “BJ”
Huffman Churchill
. She attended grad school
at the University of Minnesota, where she met her

1973, she divorced and started working at Syra-
cuse University as a bibliographic assistant. She
remarried in 1979 and, in 1980, after receiving her
MLS in information studies, worked for the Syra-
cuse City School District as a “very noisy, friendly
librarian who loved the kids and simply humored
the teachers.”
She divorced in 1981 and “met the love of my
life, Donald Churchill, at a school party.” They are
happily married, play golf and live in a suburb of
Syracuse. Retired in 2002, BJ also enjoys photogra-
phy, watercolor painting, bird watching, reading and

The third writer is
Rick Smith
, who says that
in Ottawa he ran into a hockey buddy from fresh-
man year:
Matt Zielinski
. (“Smitty” said he had
been signed by the Boston Bruins when he was
16 but attended St. Lawrence instead.) He played
semi-pro hockey and then returned to school to

economics at the high school level and retired 11
years ago; he lives in Pembroke, Ont.,and golfs
whenever possible.
Smitty and Carolyn have two daughters: Jill, a
graduate of Guelph University, and Jaime, who
graduated from Queen’s and has started her mas-
ter’s. Smitty said, “I have lost some great friends
such as Rick Gay ’69, John Henderson ’70,
Vinny
Lee
and coaches like George Menard and Bernie
McKinnon ’57”; he says he would enjoy hearing
from any ”of the old gang“ at Richard203@sym-
patico.ca.
Michael Richman
wrote with news that is
certainly germane to our generation: his mom’s
death at 101, his having to sort through all the ac-
cumulation of a lifetime as the house is being sold,
and the fact that he was laid off by his employer of
19 years due to a company consolidation.
I also received the sad news that
Stephen
Harald
died in May 2006.
Last summer I was landlocked but managed to
mooch off of friends who live on the water:
Mimi
McGavern
on Princeton’s Lake Carnegie in New
Jersey, and, in New Hampshire, I visited
Annie
Montgomery
, a new member of the Alumni
Executive Council, on Lake Sunapee, and J
eanne
Borland Chute
on Lake Winona. I also spent
time with
Susan Doscher Underwood
at her
husband Bob’s family summer home in Quogue in
the Hamptons and had lunch with
Kathleen

at a marina resort in nearby Gloucester, Mass.

August. We started the trip near water on Lake
Bled, Slovenia, picked up the ship in Split and ended
in Athens and Crete. Gorgeous scenery and his-
tory. (A boring travelogue can be obtained upon
request.)
Hope to get caught up with you at Reunion—it’s
in conjunction with the classes of ’66 and ’67 so it’s
not
technically
our 45th, but close enough!

Next Reunion: 45th, 2015
(cluster with ’70, ’71)
Within a week after submitting the column in
March (sorry I missed the last one; I was tied up
with my two granddaughters, born three weeks
apart in May), I heard from two classmates in
Florida.
First,
Judi McCuen Rood
emailed that a group
of classmates and spouses had a mini-West Coast
reunion in February in Estero, Fla. Bill ’68 and
Jane
Jochum Christ
are half-year residents of Estero,
spending the warmer months at Piseco Lake in
the Adirondacks. Dave and
Lisa Strang Lewis
spend the winter months in LaBelle, Fla., and the
warm weather either in Flemington,N.J., with their
son and daughter-in-law or at their seasonal home
in Callicoon, N.Y.
Roger Graham
and Patti live
in St. Petersburg, Fla., and spend summers at their
place on Keuka Lake, N.Y.
Dan Herrick
andAn-
nette, who live in Naples, Fla., were also there.
Judi added, “
Bob Rood
and I are still only win-
ter-vacationing in Bonita Springs, Fla., spending the
warmer weather dividing our time between work
in Syracuse, N,Y., and our seasonal homes in the
Adirondacks. Bob runs his investment business,
and I continue as a professional tutor at the local
community college’sWriting Skills Center; this fall
marks my 25th year on campus. We are fortunate
to have three kids, and now three grandsons, two
who live locally, and one in the Boston area. Our
son, a software design team manager, lives and
works in Philly.”
There’s a picture of most of this crew in the
“Gatherings” pages. If any of you are in that area
and would like to attend the next one, let me
know and I will put you in touch with Judy.
Right after that I got an email from
Dave Nach-
man
who, with his wife of 41 years, Ellen, also
winters in Estero. I had just returned from visiting
friends in Estero, in the same complex as Dave. He
has been retired for six years but does some part-
