sie was not only an unusually high achiever in her
career in education but also such an outstanding
athlete that she was elected to the SLU Athletic
Hall of fame in 1972. She was predeceased by two
Laurentian siblings, LaVerne ’32 and Howard ’35.
Jack Robins
writes that he retired 27 years
ago from Simpson Timber Co., and from his own
management consulting practice just nine years
ago. “The forest products business was really
special and could not be repeated today, and the
consulting business was unique and rewarding,” he
says.
Jack and his wife, Charlotte, celebrated their 60th
wedding anniversary in September. He writes,“We

gardening in one of Horizon House’s small plots.”
In late July, he and Charlotte visited the family
home in New Hampshire, to attend the memorial
service for Jack’s brother, Ralph Robins ’48, who
died in December 2010, and attend to the 90th
birthday party for Jack’s youngest brother, Jim ’52n.
They also visited their youngest daughter, Amy, in
Milton, Mass., and their oldest daughter, Sally, in
Wayne, Pa., along with their daughters’ husbands
and two grandchildren. Two other children live

Jack says he and Charlotte are getting too old for
the long trip from Seattle to the East Coast. Join
the crowd, Jack. You are probably one of the few
nonagenarian survivors of our class who can walk
without assistance and read without help from a
magnifying glass. Thanks for writing.
Please send more letters.

passed along this news:
Bud
(more formally known as
Dr. Elwood
) and
El-
len Booth
drove up from Liverpool, N.Y., the
morning of the Reunion parade last June, arriving
almost at its conclusion. Bud was the only one
who made it from our class, but you can be as-
sured he proudly waved the class of ’44 banner.
Bless you, Bud. You sure should be an inspiration
for all of us to start thinking of making our 70th
in 2014!
I had a wonderful long letter from
Janet Kel-
logg Johnson
. Near the end of May, Ginny and
Bud Kellogg
welcomed 45 family and friends in
Naples, Fla., for the big 90th birthday party for Bud.
The 16 of the Johnson contingent included Jan;
sons Jeff ’70 and Cheryl from Mahopac, N.Y., and
David ’74 and Susan from Connecticut; daughters
Audrey Mineo’68, Sara Korich and Barbara Boro
and their spouses; plus children, grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren. Congratulations, Bud!
On a sad note, Jan’s husband, Rusty, was buried in
Croton, N.Y. He’d passed away in May 2010. Our
sincerest sympathy, Jan.
Nancy Stevenson Adams
, who lives in Ath-
ens, Ohio, says it has been her home forever. She’s
doing well. You must remember when she drove
her Bentley to one of our Reunions in Canton.
Well, she still has it. Of course, she has an up-to-
date car for ordinary driving. The day I talked to
her, the Bentley was being prepped for loaning for
a wedding, which she often does. What fun!
The mail is still coming through, or my phone
number is at the top of the column. Keep smiling.

man of the math department, was in charge. He
was also in charge of the Civilian Pilot Training
Program during 1941-1942; there were 30 men
enrolled in CPT.

The Early Classes
Kirk Douglas ’39
was honored last summer at
the Jewish Film Festival in San Francisco, according
to an article in the
San Francisco Chronicle
. Douglas,
94, received the Freedom of Expression Award, in
recognition of the fact that 50 years earlier, as pro-
ducer and star of
Spartacus
, he had credited Dal-
ton Trumbo for the screenplay. Trumbo had been
blacklisted during the McCarthy Era witch-hunts,
and any acknowledgment of association with him
was considered a threat to one’s own career. In an
onstage interview, Douglas explained that a 1991
helicopter crash and a 1996 stroke led him to re-
discover his Judaism.
Mark “Barney” Brown ’40
, who recently
stepped down as class reporter, writes that he had
“a nice call from
Betty List Gardner ’40
. She
has moved into a retirement community in Stam-
ford, Conn., but has held on to her Darien home
and spends time in both as well as winters in Flor-
ida. She says she is doing very well and sends her
best to all,” and encourages letters at 122 Palmers
Hill,Apt. 3330, Stamford, CT 06902.
Barney says
Nate Niles ’40
“is still very active
in Rotary, misses having his boat and after 61 years
is still living in the same house. He says he sees a lot
of doctors and is always encouraged when they tell
him to come back in a year.”
Barney also keep in touch with
Dick Young

, who, “like many of us, has balance problems
and has gotten bruised by falls. He has help with
his daily living.”

our eyes. She is 100 miles from here, but I am still
driving, so we see her once in a while. Bea has mac-
ular degeneration so her eyesight is not the best,
but otherwise, our health is pretty good.We hope
all of you are the same.”
