I have agreed to give class reporting a try. I am94
and in pretty good health. I keep active in Rotary
as editor of the weekly newsletter, "Crablines,"
and doing other computer-oriented chores.
St. Lawrence gave me a great education and
startedme on a 40-year career teaching university
mathematics, fromwhich I retired in 1981.
Please send me your news.

Kirk Douglas ’39
, known to us as Isadore Dem-
sky, describes the life he led during his eight se-
mesters at St. Lawrence and the several months
between those semesters in the third chapter of
his autobiography,
The Ragman’s Son
. I wrote to
the book’s publisher to get permission to reprint
the chapter and send copies of it to classmates
who would like to read it. Please write to let me
know if you would like to receive a copy.

Early in March, A.J. O’Connell ’42 enjoyed a visit
fromdaughter Anne ’73. It’s always a big lift when
children come. My daughter, Jan, and Anthony
were here in January and again in February. A.J.
is remaining in his condo in Tequesta, Fla. At the
same time,
Dick Spooner
and Carol Kirkpatrick
’49 report that they are well, as usual.

Lennie “Buddy” Rich
has moved to Las Vegas
to be with some of his family, and he is enjoy-
ing exploring museums and restaurants. His SLU
roommate, Hal Hirschfeld '46, who has lived in
Las Vegas for some time, has been most helpful
in helping Buddy adjust to the new surroundings.
It's a di erent life than the Connecticut shore
where he lived for a few years, years after he left
West Hartford. He worked as a senior vice presi-
dent of R & D for Gerber Scienti c Co.
MarilynMerrillWheeler
and Platt '44 are enjoy-
ing their new retirement home in Fayetteville, N.Y.
according to a nice chat on the phone. It's always
good to talk with them.
I had a surprise visit from Frank '54 and Mimi
Shields recently when they stopped by for a visit
and dinner. Frank was the alumni director for
many years. They were returning from Charlot-
tesville, Va., where they had been visiting their
daughter, Cathy, and family. Win and Lawry Gu-
lick, past president of SLU, joined us for dinner
and a bit of reminiscing.
My husband, Hank, continues to live in the As-
sisted Living part of our retirement home, Jen-
ner's Pond. Although he has Parkinson's, he gets
around with a walker and enjoys reading his
Kindle. Our daughter Susan '77 and her husband,
Dave Lackmann '77, live an hour away. Their
daughter Jennifer, is a freshman at Wake Forest,
and our daughter, Andrea '82 and her husband,
Nej Mulla, and their 8-year-old twins live in Alex-
andria, Va., and visit frequently. Our son, Doug
'79, and his wife, Virginia, live in Charlotte, N.C.
Their daughter, Sarah, is a sophomore at Roanoke
College, and their son, Hank, is a second-year stu-
dent at Charlotte Latin, where Doug teaches.
NAVY NOTES: By the time you read this, Reunion
2012 will be over and I hope that Bell Herndon '47
and Fred Zito '47 and their committee convinced
many of you to return for the Navy V-5 and V-12
celebrations. One of the enthusiastic members of
this group, Walt Hluch N'47, wasn't going to make
it because of pending back surgery. Good luck to
you Walt. There was a mini-reunion recently at
the Nassau Inn in Princeton, N.J., when Walt, his
wife, Peggy, Art Hilkert'47 and Bill Herbst '47 had
lunch. They discussed their life at SLU during the
war years and talked about "the old days."
Paul
Durkin
, Gene Gatens '48, John Nill N'47 and Gene
Maloney N'47, Walt and Bill and some others have
a "computer loop" going and keep up with each
other. I amprivileged to be in this "loop" and look
forward to the emails.

I know the Reunion of May 31- June 3, 2012, was
a great time. Bell Herndon '47 and Fred Zito ’47
joined forces to encourage all V-5 and V-12 mem-
bers to return. They even contacted me. How I
would have loved to have been there. I am sure
there will be an interesting recall of a great time
in the next issue.
Unfortunately, I have no news from our class.
Please consider dropping me a line for the next
issue.
In the St. Lawrence website "In Memory" I found
the death of
Frederick A. Rexford
January 14,
2012. I have no further information. I am happy
to share news with our classmates - there aren't
too many of us left, but let’s stay close and share
our lives.

Betty Myers Francois
went to California in
March for ve days to visit her granddaughter.
They had a great time – high tea and driving up to
Santa Barbara and the vineyards.
John Quirk
celebrated his 90th birthday with 23
friends and relations in Florida. The big surprise
was his daughter and son-in-law arriving from
Maryland.
June Cosgrove Hefti
and Jack ’50 and
Bill Sherman ’47made it. His granddaughter, now
17, took him for lunch as an extra celebration.
He’s already talking about returning for our 65th
Reunion next year.
Ellin Sprague Burnup
is enjoying having her
daughter live with her. We talked about the latest
movies. I said, “don’t miss
The Artists
since it is all
about our era of the 1920s and ’30s."
Robert Rumplik
still lives in the house he was
born in in East Islip, N.Y. He was drafted and went
for pilot training, returning to graduate in 1948.
After college, he owned a Chevy dealership for 30
years on Long Island. He was married for 62 years
and has one son, one daughter and four grand-
children all living nearby. Robert remembers
his father writing St. Lawrence a check for $700,
which included room and board.
