From Charles Kelsey Gaines, Class of 1876, through Paul Graham ’99, St. Lawrence has graduated students
who returned to the University as professors. Rutherford “Doc” Delmage ’32 (above) was a revered, long-
time professor of English, specializing in Shakespeare; here he teaches a small class on the steps of Gunnison
Memorial Chapel. e chapel was named in honor of a five-generation Laurentian family, one of whose
members was Hugh Gunnison Jr. ’52 (lower left), who taught in the education department for many years.
