Going with the Dogs
Alumna among few women to run the Iditarod
Colleen Morrow Robertia ’98 was part of the “short list of women” who
competed in the 2012 Iditarod, the 1,150-mile dogsled race in Alaska, as
reported by ESPN.com. Robertia, who the story called a “zookeeper-turned-
schoolteacher,” also runs her own kennel, Rogues Gallery Kennel (www.
rogueskennel.com). In her second Iditarod, she finished in 10 days, 10 hours
and 4 minutes, placing 21st among 53 finishers.
After college, the two-sport athlete and environmental studies-biology
combined major worked with the Wildlife Conservation Society in Georgia
and later with a zoo in Jacksonville, Fla. In 2003, she went from one climate
extreme to the other, moving to Kasilof, Alaska. The town is known as a
"mushing mecca," and soon she started running dogs.
“What keeps me in the sport,” she told ESPN.com, “is my love of my dogs
and the desire to show that you can do this competitively and lovingly and hu-
manely.” She will have more to say about her experiences in the fall magazine’s
“Final Thought."
