Alumni Accomplishments
Tom Marcinkowski ’76 has received the highest honor from the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The Walter E. Jeske Award recognizes outstanding service to NAAEE and leadership within the profession.
Marcinkowski attended the NAAEE conference in Buffalo-Niagara, New York, on October 2, 2010, to accept the honor. He acknowledged many persons who provided him with professional support, including two of his SLU professors, Alan Schwartz, retired from environmental studies, and the late Bill Elberty ’53 of geography, for the opportunity to begin his environmental studies.
Currently associate professor of science and environmental education and Acopian chair of the graduate program in Environmental Education at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), Marcinkowski has been a tireless volunteer for NAAEE since the 1980s. He is most widely known within the environmental education (EE) profession for contributions in research, assessment and evaluation, helping to infuse EE into colleges of education, and for the development of a professional certification program. William Porter ’92 has been named head of U.S. Institutional for Pioneer Investment Management USA of Boston, Mass. He had joined Pioneer two years ago as senior vice president and director of U.S. Consultant Relations. In his new role, Bill is responsible for managing the firm’s institutional business in the U.S., including sales, consultation relations, client service and related support staff. Before joining Pioneer, he was with State Street Global Advisors for 12 years, and also worked at Scudder, Stevens & Clark. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a double major in government and history, he holds an MBA from Northeastern. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Hanover, Mass.
The Saint Louis (Mo.) Art Museum has announced that Elizabeth Wyckoff ’81 became curator of prints, drawings and photographs on December 1, 2010. She joined the staff after six years with the Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where since July 2006 she had been assistant director for curatorial affairs and education, and curator of prints and drawings. She has nearly 20 years of curatorial experience, beginning as a print study room curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. She has also worked for the New York Public Library. Wyckoff has received several grants and fellowships, including a Fulbright grant to the Netherlands. She double-majored in fine arts and German at SLU, and earned a doctorate in art history from Columbia University. She is a former member of St. Lawrence’s Alumni Executive Council.
Loomis Chaffee Head of School Sheila Culbert has announced the faculty appointment of Mary Liscinsky ’85, as the new dean of student life of the school. Mary moved to Loomis Chaffee from Dartmouth College, where she had worked for 17 years in key roles in the residential life program and the dean’s office, leaving as an associate dean of the college. She also worked in the residential life program at Indiana University. She received her M.Ed. from the University of Vermont, her native state. Along with her work as dean, she’s a dormitory head in Mason Hall, where she lives with her family, which consists of husband Joseph Denny and daughters Grace and Julia.
The University has learned that Nazareth College, Rochester, N.Y., has named Whitney Brice ’87 associate director of the annual fund and leadership giving for Nazareth’s institutional advancement office. Brice, who lives in her native Pittsford, N.Y., graduated from SLU with a major and honors in psychology; she was a Kappa Delta Sigma representative to Panhellenic Council. Prior to joining Nazareth, she worked at Skidmore and Hobart & William Smith Colleges, the Vermont Land Trust and Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. From 1988 to 1993 she was associate director of alumni relations and then assistant director of annual giving at SLU. She has been an active alumna, serving on the Alumni Executive Council and as a class reporter, Laurentian Club officer and Reunion planning co-chair. She has also been a volunteer for The Nature Conservancy and the National Audubon Society.
Chris Yoshida ’00 has been promoted to managing director at Morgan Stanley’s offices in London, England. He had been vice president of fixed income there, having begun his career in finance Goldman Sachs & Company upon graduating. He had interned there while still a student at St. Lawrence. After graduation, he was hired by current Trustee Donna Winston `85, then vice president of fixed income at the company, to be an analyst in the capital markets group. As a student he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. A student delegate to the Alumni Executive Council, he served as Thelmo president and was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He has been a dedicated alumnus, serving as a GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade) Committee (co-chair), career advisor, Reunion Development Committee co-chair and Leadership Gifts Committee member.
