CLASS NOTES
FALL 2012 | St. Lawrence University Magazine 55
Between the festivities there were tours of cam-
pus, including the amazing student center and
renovated gym, great conversations on the Quad,
the largest class donation presented (thank you!),
numerous purchases made at the bookstore, es-
corted hilarious tours of the Beta temple (yes, you
read that right!) and an“accidental”ringing of the
chapel bells….and tons more.
And if you didn’t make it, you can be assured
you were missed. If you are interested in being
a co-chair for the 25th Reunion, certainly let the
alumni office know.
Finally, if anyone is interested in being the class
reporter, I am most willing to pass the baton at
any time; just let me know. Thanks again, all, for
making our 20th a blast! Keep in touch with class-
mates, come to future reuions, and make your
own mini-reunions along the way. Send news!

Next Reunion: 25th, 2018
Reunion has come and gone, and while Kath
Thiesen '92 and I couldn’t make it given conflicts
with our kids’ sports teams (a coach of a playoff-
bound team cannot abandon it) and work, the
rumor is that everyone had a good time catching
up and making new memories while reminiscing
about old ones.
Our class had a great turnout this year -- 65 peo-
ple returned to campus in June! That’s certainly
better than previous years. I still can’t believe
we’ve been out in the real world for almost two

So there you have it. I don’t have enough space
to share what everyone has been doing for the
past 20 years, but believe me, people have been
busy with family and work.
Drop me an email if you get a moment, and tell
me what you’ve been up to. I’ll share it in the next
issue of the magazine.

Dr.
Nima Massoomi
told University officials that
his surgical office in San Francisco has been certi-
fied as the first LEED Platinum surgical office not
just in the U.S., but in the world. “We are basically
on par with some of the Fortune 500 companies
such as Adobe, Cisco and so on,”he says. He is an
oral andmaxillofacial and facial cosmetic surgeon
with an office in Cupertino, Calf., in addition to the
one in San Francisco.
Another doctor,
Bruin Rugge
,
reports to the
editors that he is associate professor of family
medicine in the Department of Family Medicine
at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Port-
land. He’s been there since 1999, first for his resi-
dency and then joining the faculty in 2003. “I am
an active teacher of medical students and family
medicine residents and have some contact with
pre-medical students,”he says.

Very little news trickled in this time, friends.
Please save us from the drought and send an up-
date!
A press release forwarded to me announced that
Matthew Strobeck
,
Ph.D., was appointed to the
Santarus, Inc., Board of Directors in April. Santa-
rus Chairman of the Board David Hale said, “Matt
has an impressive background in life sciences and
valuable financial experience, including his prior
role withWestfield Capital Management.”
After St. Lawrence, Matt received his Ph.D. in cel-
lular andmolecular biology from the University of
Cincinnati. Hewas amember of themanagement
committee and the advisory board of Westfield
Capital Management and serves on the board of
Metabolix, Inc. San Diego-based Santarus, Inc. “is
a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused
on acquiring, developing and commercializing
proprietary products that address the needs of
patients treated by physician specialists.”
Dwight Raby
continues to rock the house as
part of the Atlanta music scene, with occasional
ventures elsewhere. (His website noted the
spring “world tour” to locations such as Indiana
and Tennessee.) You can check out Dwight and
his band, Big D and the Refugees, at
raby.com. And you can buy his music on iTunes!
How cool is that?
Until next time, classmates.

This quarter, I tried to reach out to people who
have not submitted information on themselves
to the magazine in a long time (or ever!). I hope
this will encourage you to send in a couple of sen-
tences about yourself in the future!
I received a Facebook message from
Kenneth
Hughes
,
who lives on the shores of Lake Cham-
plain in Essex, N.Y. He left the education field in
June 2011 as a K-12 principal to be at home with
his kids and support his wife, Courtney, a full-time
massage therapist and energymedicine practitio-
ner. To fill up his free time, Ken is the“MacMan,”an
in-home IT specialist who specializes in training
and solving problems with Mac computers. He
is also a webmaster for several state and national
foreign language education organizations and
even moonlights as a DJ for school dances and
weddings. Ken’s children, Charlotte, 7, and Oliver,
4,
attend the Lake Champlain Waldorf School in
Shelburne, Vt., in the fall. Ken says, “We take the
ferry across Lake Champlain from New York to
Vermont and back again daily. This should be
an interesting school commute ... if not a unique
one!”
Chris Akins
and his wife, Mary Ellen, welcomed
their first child, Lillian Grace Akins, on April 24,
2012,
in Fairfax, Va. Lillian was born a little more
than eight weeks early and spent a total of six and
half weeks in the NICU. She is now doing very
well and came home on June 9. As if that is not
enough going on, Chris is leaving his job at Rand
