that class, he spent a fifth year at SLU. Unfortu-
nately, Joe’s sports eligibility had been used up in
four years. In his letter, he wrote: “(Coach) Burk-
man gave me a student government job, marking
and raking the baseball diamond and pitching bat-
ting practice for $15 a month, which kept me eat-
ing.” Joe and I had been teammates the previous
two years.
Larry Eschen, another of my baseball teammates,
turned out to be a Major League player with the
Philadelphia Athletics. He played for Connie Mack,
one of my earliest heroes. Larry was also a friend
of Hall of Famer Al Simmons, another of my he-
roes. Larry’s baseball career was cut short by his
military service in World War II, after which he
earned his M.Ed. degree at St. Lawrence and subse-
quently became a career mathematics teacher.
Frank Chambers
, a retired U.S. Navy captain
and retired college president, told me my letter to
him “almost made me get a ticket to the round-
up!” However, he had a bit of a setback. He had
to be hospitalized for pneumonia and contracted
“valley fever,” which sapped his energy. “Usually,
I have observed a physical regimen that includes
swimming and tennis playing,” he reported in June.
“Now I cannot walk to the court without getting
winded. So, tiddlywinks, but I must be careful.”

I asked
Dick Spooner
how things were going
for him and Carol Kirkpatrick ’49, and his reply
was, “We’re hanging in there.” Mike and Alma
Bishop Mihalik ’43 live in the same community in
Greenport on Long Island. Dick gave up golf last
year, passing his clubs on to his grandson, so I bet
there will be another low handicapper in the family.
Dick and Carol’s son won his club’s golf champi-
onship in Virginia in 2010. Good golf must be in
their genes.
In May, my daughter, Jan, and her husband,Antho-
ny, and I drove up north to my hometown,Water-
town, to tend to a little business and then took a
day to visit Alexandria Bay, Clayton and Cape Vin-
cent. The day was beautiful, though a bit too early
for the tourist season.
Hope you’ll surprise me with some news for
next time. I’m forever the optimist.

Just a bit of nostalgia to rekindle your memories:
Remember when the junior women awoke the
freshman women in the middle of the night and
paraded them over to Brewer Field House and
around the football field? This was an every-other-
year event.
Remember when Ina Ray Hutton and her orches-
tra played for either the Beta Ball or the Alpha Ball
and didn’t arrive on campus until after 10:00 p.m.
and we received a 1:00 a.m. permission?
Remember the Sand Banks, the outdoor hockey
rink, Hulett Lodge, The Sugar Bowl, Crump’s, the
“R”, Rebie’s dog, Navy inspections,Thelomathesian
meetings (always on Friday) and 8:00 a.m. classes?
And, a very special day our freshman year—De-
cember 7, 1941.
NAVY NOTES: I have great reports from Walt
Hluch N’47 about the Reunion in June. He and
his wife, Peggy, along with
Paul Durkin
and Fred
Zito ’47 and his grandson were there to cheer for
Bell Herndon ’47 when he received his Alumni Ci-
tation. Bell’s wife, Jean, and their son, Loren, wit-
nessed the occasion. Bell also held a session in
Herring-Cole Library regarding his involvement in
the Robert Kennedy assassination, which was very
well attended. Our congratulations to Bell. It is
great to have these loyal V-12 Navy men partici-
pating in current activities on campus. Thanks for
returning to your Alma Mater!
Lennie Rich
tells me that he might move from
the Connecticut shore to LasVegas. He has family
there and would like to be closer to them. Hope
you are lucky with the “slots.”
I recently learned that some friends here at
Jenner’s Pond Retirement Center know Bob
Parker ’47, who was in our original class. So, I e-

and at least a couple of
others of our class were able to attend our 70th
class reunion in June. Please let me hear from you,
Elsie. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to travel.
I received interesting letters from
Joe Tol-
hurst, Jean Clifford Cree, Mary Coak-
ley Farris
and Larry Eschen ’43. Jean sent this
four-generation family photo; from right to left
are grandson Brian, great-grandson Jack, Jean, and
Brian’s wife,Michele. Michele is a special education
teacher, Brian a lawyer, and Jack was 18 months of
age when the picture was taken.
Mary congratulates me on my ability to secure
news from you wonderful people. However, I feel I
have failed more than I have succeeded in persuad-
ing class members to write, having received nary a
word−not even a postcard−from 20 members of
our class who are still living. I beg you to write. You
will be glad you did. Several people I have heard
from have corresponded with others in our class
as the result of my writing to every class member.
Joe sent this photo of the 1939-40 basketball
team. From left to right in front are Tony Rav-
ish ’40, Phil Proller n’41 Joe, Jack Flanigan ’40, Bill
Bartlett ’42 and Bill Stolz ’40. From left to right
in back are
