Last spring, he completed the Buffalo Half
Marathon, and “while I didn’t set the world on
fire, I did exceed my personal goal, which was
awesome! Years ago, I thought people who chose
to run were nuts, but I’m starting to get it. I’m
planning on running in the Lake Effect Half this
spring just north of Syracuse, and as I understand
it, the race is very aptly named!” Last summer,
Chewy competed in the world championship
J/24 sailboat races.
Chewy keeps in contact withmany fromour class
and the surrounding classes, but, he says,“One of
the really cool things for me is that my younger
sister decided to attend St. Lawrence and is loving
it! Kirsta ’14 is a member of Kappa Delta Sigma so-
rority, and has fallen in love with the St. Lawrence
sense of family... So proud of her!”
Finally, it is heartbreaking to report the loss of
one of our classmates.
Jeff Haskins
died of a
heart attack on the Kenya coast on July 14, 2012.
For six years, he had been working as the chief
media strategist, writer and consultant for the
Kenya-based International Livestock Research In-
stitute (ILRI) and at other institutions working for
agricultural development in poor countries. The
following is from a beautiful and touching obitu-
ary from the organization he worked for:
“
Jeff had turned 32 the week before he died. He
had just celebrated his fourth wedding anniver-
sary with Meredith Braden, with whom he’d been
together since he was 16. He and Meredith had
just moved into a house with a small garden. He
had just started growing (and eating) his own
vegetables, bought a BMW touring motorcycle
and announced that he and Meredith were ex-
pecting their first child.
“
He was going to buy land in Kenya and settle
and raise his children here, start escaping on
weekend motorcycle safaris with Meredith and
friends and find newways to reach the new social
as well as traditional media. He was going to learn
how to combine his fine still images with sound in
powerful photofilm formats. He was going to be
as big as his outsized heart, his outsized commit-
ments, his outsized passion and energy.”
Classmates, I ask that you reach out to one an-
other by phone, email, snail mail, Skype, what-
ever-- just to say hello. Life is too short, and just
a quick “Hi!” or inside joke to let someone know
you’re thinking about them will bring smiles to
our saddened faces.
Rest in Peace, Jeff.

Abbey Green
married Cody Mongosa on June
11, 2011,
in Bristol, N.Y. The couple welcomed
a son, Charlie, on June 17, 2012. Abbey is in
the U.S. Navy, stationed as an instructor in
Pensacola, Fla. On behalf of us all, many thanks
for your service, Abbey!
Jessica Baker Bartlett
also wrote in with wed-
ding and career news. After finishing her Master
of Fine Arts in creative writing at Oregon State
University in 2006, she taught there for a year
before moving to northern Maine. She teaches
English at the Maine School of Science and Math-
ematics, where she is also the academic support
coordinator and humanities department chair.
Jessica and Jason wed at their home in Chapman,
Maine, on July 14, 2012. Congratulations, Jessica!
Keeping with the theme of this column, I have
my own wedding and career news to report!
David Miller and I married on July 21, 2012, in a
drive-thru ceremony in Las Vegas (yes, people ac-
tually do that!). Elvis was not involved. Originally
it was a secret, but we relented and invited three
special guests who were then charged with keep-
ing the news under wraps. We eventually told our
families and the rest of the curious public. David
is a SPY-1A radar technician on the U.S.S. Mobile
Bay, currently deployed on an eight-month tour.
I gladly gave up the world of pharma and
healthcare at the end of July and startedwork as a
senior project manager at the San Diego campus
of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), a
nonprofit organization based in Greensboro,
N.C. Its mission is“to advance the understanding,
practice and development of leadership for
the benefit of society worldwide.” I manage
custom leadership development programs for
companies of all sizes and leaders at all levels. I
amexploring graduate programs in organization
development and communication and hope
to have a master’s degree by the time we leave
California, whenever the time comes!

have moved to Beacon Hill in Boston, where
he started his new job as a lawyer at Brown Rud-
nick in mid-October.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country,
Emily Burns
married Brian Morgan in Portland,
Ore., on May 5, 2012. They have since moved to
Brooklyn, where Brian is a resident at New York
Methodist Hospital. Emily is teaching college
composition at Marymount Manhattan College
and New York City College of Technology. “I miss
my St. Lawrence friends back in Oregon but am
so happy to reconnect with the ones on the East
Coast!”she said.
Marc Guy
and
Emilia Seibert
tied the knot last
August 25. And
Marc Tapscott
married Jackie
Steger, a SUNY Cortland grad, in June. They are
both teachers living in Geneva, N.Y.
Doug Smith
and Amanda Church ’04 wrote in
that they are expecting a baby girl on February 10.
In career news,
Megan Reeve
has moved
from Boston to Washington, D.C., to work at
the Institute of Medicine. “Boston had a great
St. Lawrence alumni group, but I’m excited to see
some new familiar faces and meet up with any
alums who are here,” she said.

Nate Paro

ports that he graduated from the Philadelphia
College of Osteopathic Medicine and is now of-
ficially a doctor of clinical psychology.
