I live in Westport, Conn., in the winter and Scar-
borough, Maine, in the summer. Jim Pendergast
and I have a daughter, Charlotte, who turned 3 in
December. I also have a dog named Junior who
is paralyzed from a rare disease called FCE. He
is in a wheelchair and roams around the beach
in Maine as if he owns the place! It has been
an amazing lesson for me to realize that handi-
capped animals can have a beautiful life and are
an inspiration to so many whom we meet who
must overcome their own difficulties.

Libby Bancroft
wins an award for having
the youngest children in our class….correct me if
I am wrong! We are applying for nursery schools
while so many of you have college applications
on your minds and even young adults out in the
world, actually working!
This is a good time to ask any of you who are
pursuing your dreams if you could do some good
and take on a St. Lawrence intern who may be in-
terested in your profession.
Please write and let me know what’s happening
in your lives.

Warren County (N.Y.) Dis-
trict Attorney
Kate B. Ho-
gan
was selected as Dis-
trict Attorney of the Year at
the summer conference of
the District Attorneys Asso-
ciation of the State of New
York. Kate has been D.A. in
Warren County since 2001
and is the first woman to
hold the position. She was
formerly an assistant dis-
trict attorney in Brooklyn, where she specialized
in trial work including prosecuting cases of mur-
der, rape and serious felony offenses. She served
as president of the 62-member association in
2009-2010,
advocating passage of a state law that
makes it a felony to drive under the influence of
alcohol or drugs with a child in the car. She con-
tinues to advocate for new legislation to expand
state laws for a more comprehensive prosecution
of child abuse.
Peter
and
Anne Gerald
Bachman
have lived
in Wayland, Mass., for 17 years, with their four
children ranging from a sophomore at UVM to
a fifth-grader. Peter, self-employed for 25 years,
is a general contractor for Custom Designs, Inc.
Anne is his office administrator and a substitute
teacher in the Wayland Elementary Schools. Pe-
ter has spent quite a bit of time volunteering in
Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, where he has
built 14 houses! Anne writes that “we love St.
John (USVI) and have made some good friends
there over the last 15 years. Although it feels like
we haven’t spoken to our Laurentian friends in
a while, we still feel close to the Saltonstalls ’86,
Gibsons ’86 and Kellys ’85.”
The 50th birthday celebration for Jim Denny
‘86
proved to be a fun gathering. Many alums
flew to Atlanta from around the country to sup-
port Jim in his “old” age. It comes as no surprise
that a fantastic time was had by all! Those in at-

Scott McGowan
has two Chips: Brooke ’15 and
Willie ’16. He is still living in The Woodlands, Tex-
as, trading energy and regularly competing in 3D
archery and Sporting Clays.
The University received
news that, once again,
Scott O’Connell
has won
an award. A deputy leader
of Nixon & Peabody LLP’s
litigation department in
its Boston and Manchester,
N.H., offices, he was named
the
Best Lawyers’
2013
Bos-

Lawyer of the Year. He
received particularly high
ratings in
Best Lawyers

comprehensive peer-review surveys for his abili-
ties, professionalism and integrity. Only a single
lawyer in each practice area and designated met-
ropolitan area is honored as Lawyer of the Year,
making this accolade particularly significant.
Scott represents integrated financial service
companies—including banks, securities firms, in-
surance companies and regulated subsidiaries of
nonfinancial parents—in federal and state court
litigation and before regulatory agencies. He
earned his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1991.

With over 20 years in trust administration,
Dave
Strachan
is senior vice president and trust officer
in wealthmanagement for CambridgeTrust Com-
pany. He lives in Topsfield, Mass., with his wife,
Susan, and three children: 18-year-old Aydan,
who attends the University of Tennessee; 15-year-
old Aliza; and 12-year-old Gracyn. His family and
work keep him busy. He has many great memo-
ries of St. Lawrence but “most probably shouldn’t
be in the magazine.” Dave, I’m sure many of our
classmates can relate to that sentiment!
Letitia Howland
submitted the following: “As
has become a tradition on the first weekend
in August, I got together with St. Lawrence
friends.

Jeannine Kelsey Tocco ‘88, Sandra Hauke
Dickin ‘88 and I gathered on Lake Champlain
with assorted children and husbands. It was
a spectacular weekend full of catching up,
laughing, playing, swimming, doing puzzles,
and all of the things that make summer great!
The kids had a wonderful time re-connecting; it
has been a real privilege to see them grow up as
friends. Now that they’re a bit older, we’re even
sharing stories of college antics with them, and
they vacillate from being amused to completely
embarrassed, which is entertainment itself! I’m
already looking forward to being on campus in
May to celebrate the 25th reunion of so many
good friends from the Class of ’88.”
Cindi also wrote about the fun time the group
had together. She lives in Dover, N.H., with her
daughters Sarah, 9, and Jess, 7. As a registered
nurse, she has worked in an intensive care unit
for 14 years. Although she occasionally sees a
St. Lawrence decal on cars around town, she
doesn’t know any alumni who live in the area.
Dick Ziegler
wrote with the idea that I pose
a question to the Class of 1989 to generate re-
sponses and discussion. He suggested: “What 10
words summarize your St. Lawrence experience?”
I think this is a great suggestion and will submit
my own list of 10 words in the next column. I look
forward to hearing how others will respond.
