above, came to St. Lawrence prepared
for her first Halloween. What she didn’t
anticipate was decorating pumpkin-
shaped cookies with her American host
family beforehand.
“
I never knew you made Halloween
cookies here!” says the Spanish exchange
student, speaking of a recent afternoon
at the home of Sara Trimm, Carmen’s
host mom through a program that
pairs international students with local
families.
While Carmen enjoys the camaraderie
and chaos of life in a dorm, she says her
host family provides another perspective
on life in the U.S. “If I have a problem
with classes or anything, it’s nice to
know that I can tell Sara,” Carmen says.
Trimm says she and her husband love
watching their two sons learn from their
new “sister.” “My boys absolutely adore
her—they get so much out of it, being
able to learn about Spanish food at the
dinner table,” she says. Their sons also
enjoy on-campus events for the students
and their host families, such as a Family
Weekend reception and going to hockey
games.
As St. Lawrence’s coordinator of
international student services, Trimm
was a natural fit for the program. Other
host families come from across campus
and the Canton community, and all
make the same commitment: to help the
student navigate St. Lawrence and Can-
ton’s winters with ease. Individuals can
also become conversation partners with
international students, particularly those
in the University’s English as a Second

tion's best institutions for undergraduate

Sierra Club, has again named St. Law-

rated St. Lawrence as one of the coun-

placing the University in the top 20
percent of its peer group, with improved
measures in academic reputation, first-
year student retention and scores on
