A Star in His Field

Pa., presented the honorary
degree Doctor of Science to
Trustee Derrick Pitts ’78, chief astrono-
mer and senior scientist at the Franklin
Institute Science Museum, at its Honors
Convocation on October 2, 2011.
“Derrick Pitts has dedicated his life to
science education,” said Alice Hoersch,
right, La Salle’s executive assistant to
the president and professor of geology,
who sponsored Pitts for the degree. “He
has made astronomy and space science
accessible to many people, particularly
children. He is a role model for African-
American students in particular, who are
underrepresented in science, technology,
engineering and mathematics fields.” On
