We are hard at work in the Midwest and West
Coast creating revolutionary panoramic photo
maps of America’s rivers—think Google’s Street-
view tool for rivers!
Below the Surface was founded in 2008 as a
coast-to-coast exploration of America’s water-
ways. Our mission is dedicated to exploration
of and education about the issues surrounding
water. The organization has partnered with a
RYQFIV SJ RSR TVS½X ERH JSV TVS½X SVKERM^EXMSRW
and government agencies including the Surfrider
Foundation, Immersive Media, the United States
Geological Survey and the Nature Conservancy,
for their core program, a nationwide effort to
create 360-degree photo maps of the 27 major
navigable rivers in America. I have joined their
team to focus on the next stage of the organiza-

precious resource.
Below the Surface has a St. Lawrence connec-

Professor of History Kenneth Church. Please visit

There is no news for our class. If you’ve been en-
gaged or married, had a child or a job promotion,
or just generally done some cool things or gotten
together with fellow SLU alums, let me know! I
hope next time I’ll have something to report.

Hello classmates!
Unfortunately, the only bit of news I received
for this column is of a very sad nature.
Colin
B. Davidson Lie
passed away on December
6, 2010, from injuries sustained when his car hit
a tree minutes from his home in Charlottesville,
Va. Police reports indicate he was not wearing a
seat belt. Davidson was an advanced-level eventer
(an equestrian triathlete of sorts) who was named
to the United States Equestrian Federation’s 2010
Developing Rider List. His brother is Charles B.
Davidson ’02n. He was an organ donor.
Jessica Burnham Etien
married Bob Etien
in Latham, N.Y., on November 13, 2010. “Since I
am a school psychologist, we were unable to take
our honeymoon till I was on summer vacation,”
she said. So last summer they took their big trip
toAruba and Curacao. Her maid of honor was Jes-
sica Martin Lavalette ’00. See the “LaurentianWed-
dings” pages for a couple of pictures.
Caroline Trudeau Monninger
wrote that
she spent 10 years inVermont after graduation and
now she and her family have moved to Norfolk,Va.
“My husband, Steve, loves his new job at Norfolk
Academy while our 2-year-old son, JJ, has adjust-

hockey rink, but once the snow falls I will start my
search,” she said optimistically.
Courtney Battista Bish
wrote to say she
had recently been promoted to assistant dean of
students at SUNY Canton. She’s in her 10th year
there, and was previously director of residence life
and coordinator of Greek affairs.
Katy Braun Scrivener
wrote from the UK,
“My husband,Ryan, and I are still working for HSBC
in Canary Wharf. I have been appointed head of

Functions. I’m moving from the bank’s government
relations team, which has been great and, perhaps
as expected, a challenging job in today’s climate. At
home, we’re getting ready for some major renova-
tions which should be complete by the end of the
year so we’d welcome any SLU travelers in 2012.
We’re just 30 minutes from the heart of the Olym-
picVillage!” Great, Katy!

well. Please note my new address above.
Our 10th (gasp!) Reunion is coming up May 31-
June 3. Please save the date and be on the lookout
for a Facebook page regarding additional informa-
tion. Also note that there will be childcare available

Speaking of little ones, congratulations to

absolutely perfect. We are thrilled!” Congratula-
tions on your future Laurentian!
Kate Trzaskos Wachtmeister
wrote in to
update everyone about her new big adventure: “I
am living in Brattleboro, Vt., and attending gradu-
ate school at the School for International Training
(SIT). I plan on focusing my studies in sustainable
development through education.” Sounds amaz-
ing! Congrats, Kate!
Congratulations also to
Katie Schmalz
, who
received her master’s in occupational therapy in
May 2010, and then completed an internship in the
2029––Chris is a Brown University alum.”
Monique worked with Fred Millham ’81, MD,
chair of surgery at the hospital near Boston where
she directs ambulatory services. She’s back there
now, but reports that “the few months at home
were great and were the only time I’ve been off
from work/school since graduation. Maya enjoys
adventure––we’ve already been able to take her
on a few hikes, which she mostly falls asleep on,
and let her play in the sand and ocean.”
Josh Stearns
recently published an essay in
Orion Magazine
and writes that his current work
for Free Press “focuses on organizing and advocacy
to improve media in America. I work with com-
munities across the country that are mobilizing
to create robust alternatives to the mainstream
media, hold local media accountable to serve the
public, and reshape media policies that impact ev-
erything we watch, read and hear,” he explains. His
Orion article “seeks to weave together the move-
ment for healthy media and healthy communities.”
