CLASS NOTES
SUMMER 2012 | ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE 43
Dave Shea ’71, Joe Derrigo M’84, Phil Bain M’82,
Meg Bain M’82, Maureen Leonard Missert ’79 and
Joe Baker ’74.
About two years ago, my husband, Andy, and
I decided to move to Pittsburgh to be closer to
family. As lifelong New Yorkers, we found the
change di cult at rst, but now we are really
enjoying Pittsburgh and love being near our two
grandchildren. Unfortunately, we’re not home as
much as I’d like to be since Andy is president of
the American Society of Civil Engineers and will
spend two years on the road representing ASCE,
and I frequently travel with him.
At an ASCE meeting in Washington, D.C., I got
together with
Jim
and
Janet Huber Kabel
, who
live in Vienna, Va. Janet is working part-time at
the Fairfax County Public Schools, designing
professional development programs for school
administrators; she also works at a ladies’consign-
ment boutique on the side. Jim retired from the
U.S. Department of Transportation in 2009 and
spends his time teaching citizenship classes and
planning trips around the country with a heavy
emphasis on family, friends and national parks
(not necessarily in that order). Janet said not to
be surprised if they knock on your door someday.
Another ASCE trip brought us to Spain, where
we found the time for a wonderful visit with
Chris
Michaelsen Coloma
. Chris had spent her junior
year abroad in Spain and returned to Madrid after
graduation, eventually marrying Carlos Coloma
and raising three children. Two of Chris’ children
and all four of her grandchildren live in the U.S., so
she travels here frequently.
I’m looking forward to writing this column, but I
need your help – please send me your news!

Starr Kenyon Campbell
has been named
Champions Tour Volunteer of the Tournament for
her service to the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic
held in Biloxi, Miss. She is thus a nalist for the
Champions Tour’s Volunteer of the Year recogni-
tion at the conclusion of the 2012 season. She
was recognized for going beyond assigned duties
and setting an outstanding example for others.
Starr previously held volunteer positions at
Champions Tour, PGA Tour, USGA and PGA of
America events at Pebble Beach, Sonoma, San
Jose, Newport Beach and San Francisco, and in
Colorado, Kentucky, Ohio, Reno and Bermuda.
Steve Nieman, tournament director of the Mis-
sissippi Gulf Resort Classic, said Starr “has an in-
credible amount of experience and we are very
fortunate to have her with us here in Biloxi.” Con-
gratulations, Starr!
In February,
Dean Eppler
was awarded the “Sil-
ver Snoopy Award” by the NASA Astronaut Corps
at Johnson Space Flight Center, Houston, Texas.
To be given this honor, the recipient must be
nominated and approved by the entire astronaut
corps of NASA. The award recognizes outstand-
ing achievements related to human ight safety
or mission suc-
cess. It is one of
several overseen
by the Space
Flight Awareness
(SFA) program at
NASA.
In January,
my son David
moved to Arling-
ton, Va., to begin employment with the U.S. Fish
andWildlife Service as a management assistant.
My husband and I are “empty nesters” again, after
David spent six months with us upon his return
home from his Peace Corps service as a com-
munity environmental conservation specialist in
Panama. Fortunately, business often takes me
to theWashington, D.C., area and I will be able to
visit with him.

Peter Cooper
sent word of what he’s been up to
post-graduation: He earned an MBA from Pace,
married Linda Gilbert, had two children, and has
been living in Westchester, N.Y. After a career in
utilities, Peter became a certi ed massage thera-
pist and does a lot of volunteer work, including
EMT service. One child is an orthopedic surgeon
and the other is in law school, while Peter’s wife is
the director of state parks for the region from Al-
bany to Yonkers. Thank you for getting us caught
up, Peter!
I also have news from a fellow resident of the Tar
Heel State.
Barry Beeman
and his wife, Kathy,
moved to Pinehurst, N.C., in 2011 from New Eng-
land, where Barry had been a hospital CEO. Barry
reports he’s enjoying (practically) year-round
golf; he’s working part-time as a starter/ranger at
Pinehurst Resort and is involved with a number of
community groups. His wife is an RN.
Please follow Peter’s and Barry’s example – let us
know what you’re doing!

Jane Delmonico Cummings
spent a week in
Naples, Fla., with her four sisters and one sister-in-
law, and while there got together with Jill Bender
Pyszkowski ’77. She’s a realtor, and has been liv-
ing there for18 years or so with husband Joe and
two grown boys. It was fun to catch up after all
these years!
Aims Coney
wrote that he and his parents went
to the Cleveland Museum of Art to view a family
heirloom, which is on loan there: a silver tankard
crafted in Boston by their ancestor John Coney
in 1690. “We take it out only for family weddings
so the couple can drink a toast from it,” he said.
In early February, he and wife Terry Myers Coney
travelled to Lake Tahoe for the Sierra Ski-Orien-
teering Tour, including the Western Hemisphere’s
rst ever Ski-O World Cup. As reported in a local
newspaper, “At the concurrent North American
and U.S. Championships, they dominated their
age group, between them winning seven gold
medals and four silvers.”
Another traveler,
Kit Michael Dale,
and her hus-
band, Tony, journeyed to Panama for two weeks
inMarch. They sawexotic birds, observed thewid-
ening of the canal, went zip lining past a waterfall
and, she said, “spent a lot of time on a teeny island
where I caught a 50-inch sh -- it barely t into our
little boat.”
Allan Karnas
says his son Adam, 24, a Syracuse
University graduate, has a great industrial design
job with Motorola and is “living large in Brooklyn,
N.Y.; Sophie, my baby, 21, is a Clemson graduate
who followed her brother to Brooklyn, which ap-
parently is the center of the universe.”
I understand
John Crowley
and
Molly O’Dea
had dinner together recently in Atlanta. They had
fun catching up on old times and recent adven-
tures.
Nikki Matheson
, who lives in Moretown, Vt.,
wrote, “After many years of touring, recording and
writing for European musicians while living in
Paris, I nally got around to checking o one big
item on my to-do list: record and release my own
solo CD! It sure took a while!” She started it while
living abroad and nished it years later in Ver-
mont, where she is now a professor of French and
English at Norwich University. Songs are in both
English and French and re ect that various styles
she’s worked with throughout the years. A great
surprise was that she was awarded Best Vocalist
2011 by the Montpelier, Vt.,
Times-Argus
. She’s
hoping to continue recording. She often runs into
other Laurentians in the Mad River Valley, either
as residents or skiing visitors. For more about her,
go to www.nikkimatheson.com.
Seems Boca Grande, Fla., is the place to be these
days.
Mike Phelps
wrote that he and Amy Kane
’77 “Had a terri c time at Meg and
Je Pierce
's
new place. We missed
Bill Durkin
by a few hours.
Bill is building a new home on the island as well.”
He said he and Amy have bought a place in Na-
ples “and expect some visitors next winter.”
Alan Wooster
reports that his investment man-
agement rm, Apex Investment Services, Inc.,
passed a milestone in January when assets un-
der management reached $100 million. Al lives
in Connecticut with his wife, Marianna. Son Je
works at an investment management rm on
Wall Street and daughter Cheryl was scheduled
to graduate from Keene State University in May.
On a sad note, the University received word that
Frank A. Bersani Jr.
, of Dewitt, N.Y., passed away
unexpectedly on February 11, in Clearwater, Fla.
