CLASS NOTES
SUMMER 2012 | ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE 37
Bill reminisces that the 250-watter in Ogdens-
burg was his rst professional job in radio. Later,
he started at the
Watertown Daily Times
on the
same day as
Bill Davis
and
Andy Doty
--they as
reporters, he as a radio newsman.
Speaking of Bill Davis, he has sold his cottage at
Trout Lake, but hopes to visit the North Country
during the summer … as do I. In the meantime,
please send news!

Bob “Red” Manning
and wife Bobbie Schaefer
’50 stopped by to see us for a few days back in
February, on their annual trek to warmer climes in
Florida. Bobbie keeps in touch with a number of
her SLU friends of that older vintage.
Jane Raymond Ciarcia
wrote that she was the
Narrator for a “Tribute to Rodgers and Hammer-
stein” concert in Torrington, Conn. Jane’s daugh-
ter, Holly June, accompanied the singers. Jane
reminisced about her ve years on the Rodgers
and Hammerstein production sta , gave bio-
graphical information about the composers, and
commented on their famous musicals. She said
that she was glad to be “back in theatre,” even
for as small an event as this. We know that Jane’s
involvement with the Mummers gave her a solid
foundation for her years of enjoyable work in
“show biz.”
Don Lewis
responded to our email that he and
his children had recently returned from six weeks
in Antigua, “A good place to recover from what
ails me,”he said.
We receive an email every once in a while from
Dick Salomon
with articles of interest, and ap-
preciate his including us. We hope more of you
will do the same. Have a happy summer, and
please keep those cards and emails coming.

My reach back into the past for "column stu "
comes from the very up-to-date memory of
Dick
Baldwin.
In 1964, when Dick became director of
sports information at St. Lawrence, his wife, Caro-
lyn Ball '64, had taken on a volunteer job on the
campus, probably through the women's group
then called "Laurentian Dames." According to
Dick, the Dames were asked to host a luncheon
for the Board of Trustees and Carolyn was the
chairperson. The luncheon went o in high style,
they all had a grand time and Carolyn was compli-
mented on her choice of vichyssoise for the soup
course. Well, almost everyone. When Carolyn not-
ed that everyone seemed to enjoy the luncheon
except her husband, he allowed how "it was okay
but my soup was cold."
Now I know you have a story as good as that one
(or a whole lot better probably). I sure would like
to hear it and share it with the class.
Word from campus and from classmates seems
to bring a daily reminder of our fragile existence.
Recent communication adds the names of
Hal
Wescott, Bill Lane, Gerry Cantwell, Ann Hans-
mann Van Buren, Shirley Richardson Doebel,
Phil Goettel
and
Raymond "Bud" Nealon
to the
list.
Sorry to end this edition on a sad note. Please
write and cheer me up!

In late March,
Richard “Rit” Lennon
called
from Florida in the midst of a mini-SLU reunion.
I talked with Hal Lennon ’54, Bill Bartlett ’54 and
Ralph Williams ’54. Hal and wife Nancy Lansing
Ho mann-Lennon ’54 were leaving Florida that
week by Amtrak’s Auto Train to Washington, D.C.,
and from there driving home to Lake Placid, N.Y.,
with some family visits along the way. Rit and
wife Nancy were at their condo at Belleair Beach,
south of Clearwater, and heading home to New
Hartford at the end of March. Rit reported that he
is still playing golf and tennis.
Bill ’54
and wife Barbara Bell Bartlett ’54 spend
seven months in Venice, Fla., when not at home
in Manomet, Mass. They have two sons, Douglas
and Scott. Bill told my husband Dave ’54 that he
shot a 78 in golf that day and Dave commented,
“it was nice to shoot your age! “
Ralph ’54 and JoanWilliams reside in Alpharetta,
Ga., north of Atlanta, and have two daughters,
NancyWilliams Jameson ’82 and Carol.
Bob Burk ’54 had planned to join the group but
stayed at home in Saginaw, Mich., with wife Mary.
Bob was a “Brooklyn”buddy of mine.
Rit also had visits with
Vince Cashman
and wife
Judy Lennon Cashman ’58 and Tom ’54 and
Sistie
Sime Lewis
in Vero Beach.
Thanks to Rit for his newsy phone call. Please
keep in touch and stay happy and healthy!

By the time you read this column, we will know
whether the Class of ’56 is scheduled to cluster for
our 60th Reunion. Many classmates have voted
to combine with ’54 and ’55 for the 60th Reunion
in 2015.
Dick Bierly
said it best, “If we do our next
reunion a little early, it might increase the odds
I might make it.” The excitement is building and
our extraordinaire planner,
Doris Kloppenburg
Ferry,
is busy with the theme “Saints and Sinners:
An A air to Remember.” Be prepared; she will be
calling classmates to participate on the planning
committee.
Doris and Bob ’59 have had several Laurentians
visit in Fort Myers, Fla.
Bob Ernst
and his wife,
Terry, had dinner at the yacht club with them,
including lots of St. Lawrence conversation. Doris
and Bob bicycled to Sanibel Island for lunch with
Len Combi
and Carolyn.
Ann Shipman Wells
and Jud visited for ve days and enjoyed the
boating.
Marian Finck Moore
was happy to see
Doris when she visited a friend in Fort Myers.
The Ferrys enjoyed two and half weeks of ski-
ing in Colorado. Doris has a job forever, teaching
and training a third generation how to ski as the
original family is nowbringing cousins for Doris to
train. She is phenomenal!
Bob Ernst told me about his trip to Biloxi and
the special event at Mardi Gras. He was part of
the group throwing 100,000 beads o a oat in
the parade. Bob always looks forward to golf
with
Wayne Lausin
,
Fred Funke
,
Hank Lamour
,
MickeyWalker
,
JimHorne
and Bill Torrey ’57.
Lucy Tower Funke
and Fred have settled into
their new home with a beautiful pond with geese.
They enjoy activities at Colgate – Fred attends
the gym while Lucy participates in drawing and
painting classes.
Several classmates have shared their congratula-
