PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION
14 SPRING 2012 | ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE
For the Love of Books
The Josephine Young Room in Owen D. Young Library has been a “browsing room”
since “ODY” was built in 1959. Named for the wife of Owen D. Young (both Class
of 1895), during the spring it was renovated thanks to the estate of Richard Young
’40 and the generosity of Charles ’75 and Karen Sivy Daugherty ’75, P’12. They
and their son Tucker Daugherty ’12 helped keep the original intentions of the Young
family intact during the renovation. Taking in the completed renovation are, from
left, Charlie Daugherty; Trustee Marion Roach Smith ’77, representing the Estate of
Richard Young ’40, son of Owen D. and Josephine Young; Karen Sivy Daugherty;
and President William L. Fox ’75.
The University’s Office of Alumni and Parent Programs has
changed its name to Annual Giving and Laurentian Engage-
ment. Why the change?
A major focus of the University’s Strategic Map is to engage
alumni more deeply in order to enrich their connections to
the University and expand participation and support of all
kinds.
What do we mean by engagement? It’s all the touch-points
that alumni, parents and friends have with St. Lawrence, from
attending regional events to volunteering; from reading the
magazine to returning to campus for Reunion or Homecom-
ing; from making a gift to volunteering as career advisors or
admissions ambassadors.
The new name reflects a renewed commitment to engaging
all Laurentians with the University in new and innovative
ways. Here are just a few examples of what’s new in this area:
First-Year Convocation – New in 2011, this on-campus
event provided all first-year students with important mes-
sages about what it means to be a Laurentian for life and
how to take full advantage of all that St. Lawrence has to
offer. This event was organized by members of the Uni-
versity’s Philanthropy Task Force and will be an annual
milestone as we help students engage with their University.
For more, see the Winter 2012
St. Lawrence
, page 6.
Travel Programs – Laurentians can travel internation-
ally with fellow alumni, parents and friends. Kenya
was our first destination in 2011 (see the Winter 2012
St. Lawrence
, page 12). This year, up to 28 Laurentians will
visit Spain with Spanish Professor Emerita Rita Goldberg.
Plans are under way for a trip in 2013 to Israel, Palestine
and Jordan with Professor of Religious Studies Michael
Greenwald.
Homecoming – After more than a decade with no Home-
coming, the University brought this tradition back to cam-
pus last fall. More than 500 alumni, students, faculty and
staff participated in a weekend filled with athletic competi-
tions, Hall of Fame events, a pep rally and affinity activities.

Faculty and Senior Staff at Regional Events – Be on the
lookout for Laurentian events across the country highlight-
ing faculty and administrators. This spring we organized
book discussions in New York City and Vermont with
Professor of Global Studies John Collins and small gather-
ings with Vice President of Admissions and Financial Aid
Jeff Rickey.
