Alumni Accomplishments
Jack
Alofs ’58 was inducted
into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame on June 4, 2000. Following
in his father’s footsteps, Jack coached basketball for 32 years, the
last 20 at Herkimer County Community College, where he amassed a record
of 391-155—a winning percentage of .720. In 1991, the year he retired,
his team won the NJCAA Division III title. Twice named New York State
Junior College Basketball Coach of the Year, he has said that his greatest
joy in coaching was preparing his players for life.
Douglas
Hartford ’65 has been named vice president for advancement at Concordia
University, St. Paul, Minn. He was previously vice president for public
affairs at Metropolitan State University, also in St. Paul; vice chancellor
for external affairs at Indiana University-South Bend; and director
of planned giving at the University of California-Davis.

Richard "Rick" Beyer ’66, elementary principal at the
Seymour Magnet School of International Humanities, Syracuse, N.Y., is
the winner of the T. Walsh McQuillan Award, presented by the School
Administrators Association of New York State at its annual conference
in Saratoga Springs last November. The award is given annually to administrators
who have strong leadership skills and have made exceptional contributions
to elementary education. Beyer has crafted an orientation and mentoring
program for new administrators and is a strong supporter of training
teachers in Internet applications in teaching, and of school-community
relationships. He holds advanced degrees from Syracuse University.
George
B. "Sandy" Gordon ’67 has been named university counsel
for the University of Alabama. An attorney for the university since
1982, he will coordinate legal services provided to the system by the
Tuscaloosa campus office. A varsity tennis player and sociology major
at St. Lawrence, he earned his law degree at the University of Alabama
School of Law in 1974 and was in private practice in Tuscaloosa before
joining the university system.
Allen
Finkelson ’68 has been named one of the world’s top lawyers by Commercial
Lawyer, the leading legal industry periodical in the United Kingdom.
Finkelson, who is an attorney with Cravath, Swaine & Moore, which
ahs offices in New York City, London and Hong Kong, told the magazine
that American lawyers and investment bankers are "the architects
of a deal, not merely the mechanics." The magazine called him "one
of the half-dozen leading (merger and acquisition) individuals on the
U.S. legal scene." He has represented CBS in its $35 billion merger
with Viacom and Worldcom’s $43.7 billion takeover of MCI.
Penn
State women's soccer coach Patrick Farmer ’74 M’76 has been named
National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division I Coach-of-the-Year
for 1999. Farmer, who guided
the Nittany Lions to their first-ever NCAA Women's College Cup appearance
in 1999, has been at the helm of the young Penn State program since
its inception in 1994. The national coach-of-the-year honoree was similarly
recognized by Soccer Buzz magazine in 1998 and as the top Division
III mentor in 1989. He has guided PSU to five consecutive NCAA tournaments,
a top-three finish in the Big Ten Conference each season, including
two championship titles (1998, 1999), and the tournament championship
(1998).
Peter
F. Hunt ’75, president and CEO of Hunt Real Estate Corp., Williamsville,
NY, has been named 1999 Executive of the Year by Buffalo/Niagara Sales
& Marketing Executives, Inc. The presentation was made at the organization’s
Distinguished Sales and Marketing Awards event on February 28, 2000.
He is the third generation in his family to lead the firm, which was
founded by his grandfather in 1911, and has overseen its remarkable
growth in the last two decades. He has been active in real estate on
the national level, having testified before a Congressional hearing,
and has a lengthy list of civic involvements, including chairman of
the board of trustees of Daemen College and youth hockey coach.
Charlotte
Barnard ’77 has been named editor-in-chief of Hearst Special Publications,
a group of titles such as House Beautiful Kitchens/Baths and
Good Housekeeping Do It Yourself that provide information and
service on decorating, remodeling, home improvement and home building.
Before that, she had been an editorial production manager for Vogue
and an editor for many publications, including Glamour and Ladies’
Home Journal.
James
"Jay" Ireland III ’77 has been named president of NBC
Television Stations, with offices at NBC headquarters at Rockefeller
Plaza, New York City. He had been with General Electric since 1980,
most recently as vice president and CFO for GE Plastics in Pittsfield,
Mass. He has overall executive responsibility for overseeing the operation
of NBC’s 13 owned-and-operated television stations, which reach more
than 27 percent of U.S. television households.
Linda
Terrell Mitchell ’80 has been named vice president and general counsel
of America West Airlines. She oversees all legal affairs of the airline,
based in Phoenix, and The Leisure Company; both are wholly-owned subsidiaries
of America West Holdings Corporation. She holds an MBA from Lake Forest
College and her law degree from Harvard.
Scott
Giles ‘82 was walking around the Antarctic one day last January
(that region’s midsummer), and whom should he bump into on the shores
of Lake Hoare but a fellow Laurentian, Andrew Fountain ’75. Giles,
a staff member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources,
was overseeing a National Science Foundation research program there,
while Fountain, a glaciologist and assistant professor of geology at
Portland (Ore.) State University, was a team leader of one of the NSF
projects. "We had quite a chuckle that we could go to the end of
the Earth and still run into a fellow Laurentian," Giles said.
Anne
Sibley ’85, M’94 is the new director of public relations at Clarkson
University. She had held a similar position at SUNY Canton College of
Technology. At Clarkson, she is responsible for shaping Clarkson's overall
public relations strategies and program. In particular, she will work
with regional, national and business media.
George
N. Whitmore ’89 has joined Standish, Ayer & Wood, Inc., a Boston-based
investment firm, as vice president of advisor sales. In this newly-created
position, he is responsible for marketing and selling mutual funds and
separately managed tax-sensitive products to the registered investment
advisor community.
David
Haffenreffer ’90 has joined CNNfn as a business news anchor.
From the CNN Business News headquarters in New York city, he co-anchors
"Ahead of the Curve," a weekday early-morning news program
that prepares viewers for the day ahead with a complete overview of
the day’s headlines and the latest analysis of market performances around
the world. Haffenreffer has hosted the syndicated personal finance program
"Money Talks" and provides Reuters financial updates for ABC-TV
and been business news and financial markets anchor for Bloomberg Radio
and Television.
Marsh
Inc. has announced the appointment of Mona Maroun ’94 as assistant
vice president in its Syracuse, N.Y., office. She is responsible for
day-to-day maintenance of risk management accounts and for managing
property and casualty insurance coverage. A global professional insurance
services firm, Marsh Inc. is part of the Marsh & McLennan Companies
Inc.
Shelley
Clements ’99 has been named traffic coordinator at Direct Results
Group, Boston, Mass., a marketing and customer relations firm. She oversees
all agency workflow. While studying in London on St. Lawrence’s program
there, she completed an internship in advertising. A Faculty Scholar,
she graduated magna cum laude with majors in English writing and fine
arts and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
At
Moving-Up Day ceremonies on April 29, Alumni Council member Hugh Gunnison
’52, center, presented Alumni Council Senior Leadership Awards to Kristian
Margherio ’00, left, and Janné Linares. Margherio,
of St. Louis, Mo., was the number one student in his class, graduating
with a cumulative GPA of 3.984; he was a member of the men’s hockey
team, which advanced this year to the Division I Frozen Four. Linares,
of the Bronx, N.Y., was a leader in several organizations, including
Intercultural House and the Black Student Union, and was a writing tutor
in both Spanish and English. Both students plan to attend law school;

A 50/50 Class
At a special banquet on the Saturday
of Reunion Weekend, the 50th Reunion class of 1950 was honored
and inducted into the Honor Guard. In their remarks on that occasion,
President Sullivan and Reunion Chair Bill Davis ’50 provided several
glimpses of the class, from which we have drawn these excerpts:
· The Class of ’50 was the largest
to that time in St. Lawrence history, beginning in the first post-World
War II year, 1946, with 339 members, including 212 men.
· It
experienced such joys as a 41-6 defeat of Clarkson in football and endured
such sorrows as the loss to fire of the R, a favorite student hangout
downtown.
· Classmates
participated in one of St. Lawrence’s first capital campaigns, a $400,000
drive, finished just before their graduation on June 11, 1950, to build
an indoor hockey and skating rink—today’s Appleton Arena.
· Their
Commencement speaker was Louis St. Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada,
and his speech was broadcast nationwide bv ABC Radio.
· The
class produced business executives, college professors, attorneys, physicians,
engineers, librarians, teachers, ministers, military officers, entrepreneurs,
an opera singer and an FBI agent.
· Fifteen
were elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
· Sixteen
have been named to various editions of Who’s Who.
· Nineteen
have served on the Alumni Executive Council.
· Three
became trustees of St. Lawrence.
