Karen and i visited
Lynn Cooke Toettcher,
who
lives in the area. she enjoys visiting her son and
his family in the Boston area.
Mibs Wagner
is retired, although it doesn’t
sound like she’s resting much! she enjoys play-
ing bridge, golfin , meeting new friends, visiting
weekly with the grands and going out for dinner
and dancing. Her solo grand circle travels have
included the great r ivers of europe, most recently
“
italy: tuscany, the alps & the r iviera.” Her Dg so-

SusanWelles Appel
was on the same
trip. next June, Mibs heads for turkey. she enjoys
volunteering and event-planning, and is planning
on being at our r eunion. “get in touch if you’re
heading to nyc or environs,”she says,“and let’s be
sure we ‘singles’ find each other for the weekend
activities!”

able-bodied i have not been in writing this col-
umn. in October i took a swift and sudden spill
on the sidewalks of r ehoboth. eight days in the
hospital later, i came home with both arms in
contraptions. as i type this (in January) with two
fingers and a thumb, things are much improved,
though i face a few fi -up surgeries still. t hings
got out of whack in the household organization,
so forgive me if i fail to include some news from
your house. My guess is that none of us makes it
this far without a few ticks and dings, so i hope
yours – in the words of a friend – are“not catching,
not permanent, not fina .”
t he best of October for me was a visit from
San-
dy Coventry Palmer
and Jeff while the palmers
were bicycle-touring the Delmarva peninsula and
cape May. Fortunately, they were back in cazeno-
via by the time Hurricane sandy whipped up the
atlantic coast.
Peggy Moore Abt
was a professor of english at
sUny Orange in Middletown, n.y. now, she and
her husband of 46 years, Ken, have retired to sara-
sota, Fla. But they have the best of both worlds,
coming to a lake house in poultney, vt., from May
to October.
peggy is part of one of those sLU dynasties with
multiple alums over generations, including her
Mom, Mildred r oberts Moore ’34, daughter Lisa
’90
and son peter ’92. peter, in that great Lau-
rentian tradition, married classmate Meredith
townsend. Five grandkids aged 5 to 16 are not yet
qualified o add to the list.

peggy loves the freedom retirement allows for
travel, family time, and the enjoyment of music
and theater, lectures and classes. But, she also
gives back to her communities both in Florida
and vermont. she serves on the boards of the
sarasota Ballet, asolo r epertory t heater, planned
parenthood of southwest and central Florida, and
the Dorset vermont t heatre Festival.
One of the gifts of December is the chance to
catch up with many classmates through holi-
day cards and notes.
Kathleen Moore
wrote of
the light in her homes, including a new one in
newburyport, Mass., and a change in her sense
of her personal image from “hummingbird to
snowy owl”!
Sheila Rorke
celebrated her land-
mark birthday (the one many of us share this
year) with biking and rambles in the northeast.

the University has sent a

donors. t he campus color
views are always great, but
this year each has a black-
and-white inset from the
past of the locations for each
month. t he one for august
shows a group of students
filling the chapel. it is a sibling of, though not
identical to, one in the front of our yearbook.

Leigh Berry
wrote on January 2 that she and
tom coburn were “headed on an adventure: a
month of volunteering in sri Lanka. check out
www.goeco.org.
"i turned 70 on December 23
and tom and i decided to do something worth-
while and see a place we’ve never been to but
yearned to be,”she explained.
in December i received the sad news that
Susan
Krafchuk McDermott
had died in north caroli-
na. sue and husband peter, vermont residents for
many years, had recently completed a retirement
home at albemarle plantation in Hertford, n.c.
“
chucky,” as most of us knew her at st. Lawrence,
had a varied career that included teaching and re-
tail and insurance work. (she and peter met dur-
ing a phone conversation in the ’70s, while he was
seeking insurance for a vermont chalet.) together
they had owned t he Mad Batter Bakery and café
in south Londonderry and Manchester, vt.
sue retired as the managing director of Ben-
nington county’s Meals on wheels. r etirement
enabled her to enjoy many interests in both new
england and southern climes. shewas an avid na-
ture lover and gardener who loved to kayak. she
continued to sing, as she had as a sinner, most
recently in the albemarle chorale. she also en-
joyed reading, yoga and watercolor painting, yet
still found time tomentor children at local schools
and through Literacy volunteers of america.
i was lucky to garner a few quiet moments with
susan at our 45th r eunion, and to note her un-
changed smile and joie de vivre. even through
the months of her final illness, according to peter,
that never changed. we should all hope for such a
legacy. vaya con dios,“chucky”McDermott.

and Mary Lou sprague ’64 live in
Maryland and maintain a home in canandaigua,

pharmaceutical industry and teaches courses on
sterile drug manufacturing and quality control
technology. He also volunteers for Usp and ast a.
Last spring,
Allan Fisher
went on a 12-day concert
tour of cuba with the University of california-Berk-
ley alumni choir. He and ellen spent a few weeks
at their second home in nobleboro, Maine, but live
in el cerrito, calif. Besides enjoying two grandsons,
allan is chief archivist at the western r ailway Mu-
seum in r io vista Jct., calif. He spends four days a
week cataloging the collection and supervises 20
volunteers.
JessieRightmyerOsborne
andDick ’64write that
after 46 years in concord, n.H., they are moving to
ann arbor, Mich., to be near one son and family.
He is a vascular surgeon and she retired from the
new Hampshire House of r epresentatives in 2010
and will continue to participate in the democratic
process in Michigan. in the winter, Jessie and Dick
visit Miami to see their other son, who is an emer-
gency roomphysician; they also visit their daughter
in sarasota. when
Terry Maloney Johnson
visits
her daughter in Maine, she and Jessie get together
for lunch and catching up.
Pam Scalise Roth
writes that she and neale en-
joyed the reunion for ’66, ’67 and ’68 and were
joined by her father, tony scalise ’43. she saw my
fellow class reporters Jim ’66 and stevie Macphee
Michaelson ’66 and also Jen Figurelli ’66. pam has
been enjoying retirement and traveling, most re-
cently to argentina.
Judy Pape Edwards
and
Jon
split their time be-
tween a summer home in Montauk, n.y., and a
townhouse in annapolis, Md. Jon is a captain for
a towboat and recovery operation, sea tow. in the
summer, Judy works in a bookshop and spends
time with their three daughters and fi e grandchil-
dren. in Maryland, she does volunteer work and
belongs to a book club. Last year, they cruised the
Mediterranean. t hey are an sLU family; they joined
Jon’s Dad, Orville ’38, for his 75th r eunion along
with daughter Karyn ’90 and her husband, Dick
niles ’87, and Judy’s brother, Lynn pape ’68.
i have two grandsons, born last september and
December to my daughter Hilary and my son,
parker, respectively. My daughter tori Lilley ’96 re-
married in september and has two stepsons, ages
9
and 7. so we went fromno grandchildren to four
boys within four months. what a thrill!
