Women’s Hockey Goes Social
t he st. Lawrence women’s ice hockey squad gave fans an inside look at col-
lege hockey and educated them about staying safe on social media during
their game against c larkson on February 2. “saints go social” featured special
jerseys worn by the team as well as contests, giveaways, behind-the-scenes
video and live updates via twitter throughout the game. "current and future
students live their lives very publicly through Facebook, twitter, yout ube and
other online social media forums,” Head coach c hris wells ’92 said. “i want to
be proactive with my team and teach them about the positive aspects of us-
ing social media.” speaking of positive aspects, the saints won the game, 3-2.
Two-on-One Rush
never before in st. Lawrence hockey history have two saints been
named finalists in the same ear for the Hobey Baker award, the Heis-
man t rophy of men’s college hockey. Both greg c arey ’14, right, and Kyle
Flanagan ’13 can put that distinction on their resumes, having been
included in the 10 finalists or the award just as this magazine was going
to press.
c arey finished the egular season first in the n tion in Division i of the
nc aa in goals, goals per game and power-play goals, and second
in points and points per game. He was also ec ac scoring champion.
His senior linemate and c anton native Flanagan, who joined the nHL
philadelphia Flyers’minor league system after the saints’ season ended,
was third nationally in assists per game and total assists, fourth in points
per game and sixth in total points. He was runner-up to c arey in ec ac
scoring, giving st. Lawrence a one-two sweep.
Over the years, st. Lawrence has had several Hobey Baker award finalists
and two runners-up. t his year’s 10 finalists ere announced March 22,
and the winner at the Frozen Four in pittsburgh on april 12. For updates,

Jim Blanchard ’62 sent us this picture (left) of
Jeremy Mwenda ’11, one of two 10-by-15-foot
pictures in a main entrance window at the
nc aa Hall of c hampions in indianapolis. “i
was a mentor for Jeremy while on the a lumni
executive council,” says Blanchard, “and we
have continued to stay in touch.”Mwenda is a
software engineer for a company in Bedford,
Mass.
