by wally Johnson
There have been some notable hockey
games among the 1,974 played by
St. Lawrence University’s men’s team
between a winter 1926 encounter on a
frozen pond with neighboring Clarkson
and a January 4, 2013, 4-3 win over
Rochester Institute of Technology. The
latter game was the admission ticket
for the Saints into a select group of
Division I men’s hockey programs: the
1,000-
win club.
With its eighth win of the 2012-13
campaign, St. Lawrence joined 15 other
institutions among the 59 currently
playing Division I ice hockey with
1,000
or more wins in program his-
tory. Six of those teams compete in the
ECAC: Clarkson, Cornell, Dartmouth,
Harvard and Yale preceded St. Lawrence
into the group. In addition to their
ECAC brethren, the Saints join all-time
wins leader Minnesota (1,659), Michi-
gan (1,563), Boston College (1,454),
Boston University (1,440) and New
Hampshire (1,148).
Among the 1,000 Saints program
victories were more than 500 wins in
ECAC league play since the inception
of the league in 1962, and almost 560
in Appleton Arena. St. Lawrence has 60
more wins in ECAC tournament games,
six of those in championship games,
and five NCAA tournament wins. All
but 192 of the 1,000 wins have come
since the inception of ECAC play in
1961-62,
more than 560 of them since
1980-81
and nearly half (468) during
the 26-year tenure of recently retired
head coach Joe Marsh.
