Alumni Accomplishments

St. Lawrence Trustee Sharee Freeman ’76 has received two distinguished awards in the past several months. Last July, The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) presented Freeman, who is director of the Community Relations Service (CRS) of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., with the 2005 Robert Lamb Humanitarian Award (pictured). Annually, NOBLE honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding work in the areas of human welfare and social reform in a law enforcement context.  In September, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) presented her the IACP Civil Rights Award.  She received the award on behalf of CRS in recognition of its promoting positive police-community relations, especially as they relate to issues of race, culture and ethnicity.  

SUNY Canton has recently welcomed two Laurentians to its administrative ranks. Brian J. Lee ’68, right, is serving as interim vice president for administrative services, while Randy Sieminski ’87 is director of public relations.

Lee first became involved with SUNY Canton as an economic developer when the college and St. Lawrence County, among others, began working on the anaerobic digester project. A psychology graduate of St. Lawrence, he earned his MBA in operations management at Union College.
Sieminski returns to the North County from a position as vice president of the communications department with the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Sunrise Sports and Entertainment. He was Greek life coordinator and assistant director of student activities at St. Lawrence, 1990-1992.  He helped the Panthers gain industry-wide recognition by winning Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal’s “Stanley Cup of Business.”

University athletic trainer Ron Waske ’69, former trainer of the New York Islanders of the NHL, will be inducted into the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Association/Society of Professional Hockey Equipment Managers Hall of Fame in June. A plaque at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto will recognize Waske for his achievements.

This year’s honor goes to the Islanders’ duo of Waske and equipment manager Jim Pickard, who worked together 1974-84, including the Islanders’ run of four consecutive Stanley Cup championships (he is pictured with a photograph of himself holding aloft one of those cups). Waske was also the athletic trainer for two NHL All-Star games and served as vice president of the PHATS.

Waske returned to his alma mater as associate athletic trainer in 1984, becoming head athletic trainer in 1985. From 1997 through 1999 he was head coach of the Saint women’s ice hockey team in its transition from Division III to Division I, returning to his duties as head athletic trainer for St. Lawrence’s 32-sport athletic program.
