Alumni Accomplishments
The
AT&T Board of Directors has appointed Betsy Bernard ’77 president-designate
of AT&T and the head of AT&T Business. She will become president
of AT&T upon conclusion of ongoing business transactions, according
to a company announcement, which describes her as “a proven industry
leader who brings 23 years of business-to-business experience with four
telecom companies” to her new position. AT&T Business is involved
with the corporation’s services, global networking and sales, and
finances.
Senator
Susan Collins ’75 (R-Maine) was among several notable women providing
inspirational words on Yahoo!’s Web site promoting October as Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. “Astoundingly, of the three million American
women who are living with breast cancer, an estimated one million don’t
know it,” she says. “Early detection is currently the best
way to combat breast cancer and improve a woman’s chances for successful

Marianne Eisenmann ’78 has been appointed managing director for
North America by Echo, a global communications research group. She has
worked in public relations for 20 years, most recently as vice president
for Edelman Public Relations. She has also been affiliated with Abbott
Asian (now Ruder Finn), Shangri-La Hotels, Beijing Lufthanse Center and
Sara Hotels.
Jon
H. Kingsepp ’62, senior attorney and Litigation Practice group
leader at Howard and Howard Attorneys, P.C., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.,
has been invited to join the American College of Trial Mediators as a
fellow, and in September, was elected chair of the Alternative Dispute
Resolution Council and chair of the Senior Lawyers Council of the Michigan
State Bar. A specialist in business and insurance litigation, public
sector law and white-collar crime, he is the author of several articles
and has been a member and officer of numerous professional associations.
He earned his J.D. cum laude at Wayne State University Law School in
1968. He is a member of the St. Lawrence Alumni Lawyers Association.
Trustee
John P. Loughlin ’79 has been named president of TV Guide Publishing
Group. This newly-formed business unit of Gemstar-TV Guide International,
Inc., will contain all of TV Guide’s print and on-line businesses,
including the TV Guide Magazine Group and TV Guide Online(SM). He had
been at Primedia, Inc., where he was president and CEO of Primedia Consumer
Media and Magazine Group and an executive vice president of Primedia
Inc. There, he led one of the largest magazine publishing operations
in the United States with over 150 magazine titles and Web sites including
Seventeen, American Baby, Motor Trend, New York Magazine and Soap Opera
Digest. He has an MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration
and lives in Rye, N.Y., with his wife, Darlene, and their two children.
Justin
Madden ’87 has been named a partner in the law firm Spangenberg,
Shibley & Liber LLP in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his law degree
with high distinction from Ohio Northern University in 1993 and practices
in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice, products liability,
consumer protection and “lemon laws.” He and his wife, Anita,
and their three children live in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Kathleen
Ruane Martinson ’74 of Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, has been
selected as Iowa’s Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator of
the Year for 2001-2002. Kate has been working extensively with the design
concepts for a new community arts building. She also has a long list
of published works. She is an accomplished fiber artist, with an MFA
in book arts from the University of Alabama, sharing her expertise with
her community in a variety of forums. And, most notably, “Kate
is a highly regarded member of the education faculty at Luther College.
Students and staff both praised her enthusiasm and leadership skills.
To quote a student of Kate’s, ‘I hope that a few of her wonderful
qualities such as motivation, sincerity, honesty, enthusiasm, creativity
and encouragement, and passions have rubbed off onto me.’”

Paula
Judson Stack ’76 has been named vice president of sales and marketing
at Novartis Animal Health US, Inc. The company, based in Greensboro,
N.C., researches, develops and sells animal treatments for pet owners,
farmers and veterinarians. She previously worked in brand management
at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Bristol-Myers, CIBA Consumer Pharmaceuticals
and Colgate Palmolive.
Charles
C. Turner ’66, executive director for 22 years of the Colorado
and Denver Bar Associations in Denver, has been given the Bolton Award
for Professional Excellence. He was honored by the National Association
of Bar Executives for holding the highest standards of professionalism.
Turner received his law degree cum laude from the University of Denver
College of Law in 1971. Before the bar associations, Turner was an assistant
dean of the College of Law and director of Continuing Legal Education
in Colorado for eight years. He is a member of the advisory boards of
the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the
Latin American Research and Service Agency and is a board member of the
Colorado Lawyers Health Program. He and his wife, Debbie, live in Denver;
they have three adult sons.
