1934
Leslie W. “Pop” Gallt
died July 4,
2012,
at his home in South Orange, N.J. He was
101
years old. “Pop” was a brother of Alpha Tau
Omega and was on the football, tennis and wres-
tling teams, the latter of which he was captain as
a senior year. He was also the first to represent
St. Lawrence in wrestling’s national tournament.
He was editor-in-chief
of

Laurentian

sports editor of
The Hill
News
and chairman of
the Financial Investi-
gating Committee. He
was the student repre-
sentative on the Athlet-
ic Board of Control, was
on the Campus Council
and was inducted into
Kixioc. After receiving
a degree in business
administration from St.
Lawrence in 1934 and a lawdegree fromBrooklyn
Law School in 1938, the following year he opened
his law practice in New York City. He was a vet-
eran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant com-
mander and port director in the U.S. Navy (1942-
1946).
A faithful supporter of St. Lawrence, he
volunteered for many fundraising campaigns and
chaired his class’ 50th reunion. In 1987, St. Law-
rence presented himwith an Alumni Citation, and
he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in
1993.
His survivors include his grandson, Samuel
W. Virden ’09.
1935
Doris Klein Vaughn
passed away
April 10, 2012, in Portland, Ore. She earned de-
partmental honors in history and was elected to
Phi Beta Kappa. She also was on the staff of T
he
Hill News
.
After graduating from St. Lawrence, she
taught Latin and world history for six years and
then worked as a medical technologist until she
retired in 1983.
1943
Ledyard P. “Ledge” Hale
died May
11, 2011,
in Newport Beach, Calif., at the age of
90.
He attended St. Lawrence for two years be-
fore enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard duringWorld
War II. For his service he
was awarded the Purple
Heart. After returning
home, he finished his
coursework at St. Law-
rence and also gradu-
ated from MIT with a B.S.
in chemical engineering,
via the equivalent of to-
day’s 3+2 engineering
program. At St. Law-
rence he was a member
of Beta Theta Pi frater-
nity, of which his grand-
father, Judge Ledyard Park Hale, Class of 1876 and
chairman of the Board of Trustees, 1919-23, was
one of the founders.
Raised on the family farm near Canton, he spent
his career in corporate management, running his
own industrial distribution company with a part-
ner for more than 40 years. His wife, Virginia, pre-
ceded him in death by about a month; survivors
include his nephew, John N. Hale ’75n.
Faithful supporters of St. Lawrence, the Hales es-
tablished the Ledyard P. Hale II and Virginia P. Hale
Scholarship Endowment, which has been award-
ing scholarships to North Country students since
2000. “
Ledge” and John Hale also donated to St.
Lawrence their grandfather’s extensive library.

1945
Marilyn Merrill Wheeler
of Fayette-
ville, N.Y., passed away July 6, 2012. She was a sis-
ter of Kappa Kappa Gamma andmet her husband
of 67 years, Platt M. Wheeler ’44, at St. Lawrence.
They are among the second generation of a fam-
ily whose lineage spans four generations of St.
Lawrence alumni and current students. She was
preceded in death by her brother John F. Merrill
’41;
son, Richard M. Wheeler ’70; mother and fa-
ther-in-law, Nathan and Geraldine Walls Wheeler
1915;
and brother-in-law, Richard E. Wheeler ’47,
P’76n, ’79. Her immediate survivors include sons
David ’67, P’91,’94 and Jonathan ’80, P’15, who
married Nanette Eppolito ’81, P’15; daughter
Cynthia Manning P’10,’12,’15; and grandchildren
Kathleen DeParde ’91, EllenWingard ’94, John F.X.
Manning III ’10, Maryn Manning ’12, Anna Man-
ning ’15 and TimothyWheeler ’15.
1949
Sally M. Hammes
of San Diego, Calif.,
passed away May 15, 2012. She pledged to Delta
Delta Delta and received her B.S. in psychology.
She was a member of the Outing Club and
The
Hills News
staff. She also sang in the women’s
chorus and played intramural sports. After gradu-
ation, she worked as a secretary, a chemical re-
searcher and a system analyst.
1949
Charles “Charlie” F. Gulbrandsen
died on August 2, 2011, at his home in Sun Lakes,
Ariz. After a year at St. Lawrence, he enlisted in
the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He
returned to St. Lawrence in 1945 and lived in
Vetsville with his wife, Helen. He pledged to Beta
Theta Pi, was a member of the Outing Club and
made the Dean’s List. His survivors include his
brother Sigurd ’52; daughter, Barbara Gulbrand-
sen Hennessy ’73n, who is married to James “Jim”
Hennessy ’71; and granddaughter, Devon ’15.
1949
Charles F. Reed
passed away Septem-
ber 1, 2011, at his home in Canton, N.Y. In 1943, he
enlisted in the Army Air Force, where heworked in
communications in India. After being honorably
discharged in 1946, he enrolled at St. Lawrence.
He received his B.A. in history, after three years of
study, meriting departmental honors and mem-
bership in Phi Beta Kappa. He received his mas-
ter’s degree in history fromHarvard University the
following year. He is remembered by his nieces
and nephews.
1954
William B. Vernon Jr
.
of Greensboro,
N.C., died May 22, 2012. While earning his B.A.
in government, he pledged to Phi Sigma Kappa
fraternity, of which he was secretary his junior
year. He was a member of ROTC and Omicron
Delta Kappa; he was also business manager for
The Hill News.
His survivors include his son, Jeffrey
W.Vernon ’78, who is married to Catherine“Cathy”
Gelfuso Vernon ’78.
1960

Arnold J. Gottesman
passed
away May 28, 2012, in Kerhonkson, N.Y. He served
in the U.S. Army 1948-1949 and the Army Reserve
1949-1954.
He graduated from New York Univer-
sity in 1953 and received his master’s degree from
St. Lawrence in 1960. He taught social studies and
worked as a guidance counselor before becoming
assistant principal and then assistant superinten-
dent in the Rondout Valley Central School District.
1966
Robert F. “Bob” Perani
died while on
a flight from Detroit to Tokyo en route to his re-
tirement home in Thailand on April 15, 2012. He
was a resident of Fenton, Mich. While he was at
St. Lawrence, he earned his B.S. in psychology and
was a member of the L Club. He was also an All-
American goaltender for the men’s hockey team.
After graduation, he played five seasons with the
Flint Generals in Flint, Mich., and then, after stints
with a pizza restaurant and sports store in the
Flint area, founded the hockey equipment super-
store chain Perani’s HockeyWorld.
1969
Jane M. Barry
passed away at her
home in San Diego, Calif., on June 23, 2012. She
pledged to Delta Delta
Delta and sang with the
Sinners. After receiving
her B.A. in government,
she entered the pen-
sion and profit-sharing
field, beginning in Bos-
ton before heading to
the West Coast. She
worked for 30 years at
the Epler Company in
San Diego, where she
served as president. She
grew up in Ogdensburg, N.Y., and had recently
set up a $200,000 scholarship at St. Lawrence
for North Country students. Her survivors in-
clude her many siblings and her brother-in-law,
John G. Douglas ’71.
1977
Ronald P. Harris
of Beaverton, Ont.,
passed away April 12, 2012, after a battle with
brain cancer. He received his B.S. in geology from
St. Lawrence and played on the junior varsity
hockey team. Those remembering him are his
wife, Kellie, and three children.
1984
Mary Marvin Pollis
of Rhinebeck, N.Y.
and Falmouth, Mass., died on April 20, 2012. She
earned her degree in psychology and was a sister
of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her survivors include
two of her four children, Carolina ’12 and Andrew
’14,
and a niece, Daley O’Herron ’12.

Alan “Curt” Stone
of Pittsburgh, Pa.
passed away suddenly on April 26, 2012. He
earned his B.A. in economics from St. Lawrence
and pledged to Sigma Chi. He also played var-
sity lacrosse. His survivors include his daughter
Pegeen ’15.

Andrea E. Blakeley
of Gloucester, On-
tario, passed away April 25, 2012. While earning
her degree in psychology and history, she made
the Dean’s List and was inducted into Phi Beta
Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta, the history honorary
