Scott Shabot
writes that his son Benjamin (Ho-
bart ‘10) has joined the US Navy, while his older
son is manager at Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach,
Fla. His business, SASDIGITAL.net, became agency
of record for the BoomerTimes, a south Florida
publication targeted to Boomers. "We are build-
ing two websites for them, and deployed an ag-
gressive social media strategy and a CRM/email
program,” he says. They have clients in Israel and
Australia and continue to work with “many lead-
ing professionals and realtors.”

who lives in Wall, N.J. He has seen

Frank Howell
and
Rick Klingman
in the past year. Jim has another year left teach-
ing in Halifax, and then will retire. He and his wife
bought a place in Florida to escape the cold win-
ters. Dave is a human resource manager and has
two kids. Frank has four kids. He has a job in Flori-
da, but kept his home in Avon Lake, Ohio, until his
daughter graduates. Rick is retired after 25 years
working for the federal government. 


I joined a St. Lawrence aumni event at a Cleve-
land Indians game in May, in the owner’s loge
–
now that’s the way to go... what a view! Paul
Dolan ’80, president of the Indians, kindly hosted
the event. All had fun and Indians evenwon, beat-
ing Tigers pitching star Justin Verlander.

Terry Sullivan
emailed with an update on his
annual “winter adventure” with his St. Lawrence
roommate
Chris Noonan
in March. He writes,
"
Given the mild temperatures, we spent several
days rock climbing, one day at the Shawangunks
in southern New York and another in the Adiron-
dacks. Chris and I get together when we can to
climb, ski, play guitars and drink Labatt’s, just like
the old days.”
Ed Kelley
was honored by Syracuse Newspapers
with the annual Central
New York Community
Achievement Award. Ed
is chair of the business de-
partment and public fi-
nance practice group of
the Upstate New York law
firm Bond, Schoeneck &
King. He is one of only
nine community leaders
who were recognized for
making a difference. A life-long supporter of the
YMCA, he was honored for applying his leader-
ship, legal expertise and financial acumen as a
newly elected board president to save and re-
invigorate Syracuse’s downtown YMCA facility,
which was slated for closure due to a variety of
problems, including debt, shrinking membership
and an aging facility. Following that success, Ed
led the charge to develop a full-service subur-
ban branch facility, which has become enormous-
ly popular. He applied his expertise to locate the
site, develop the plans and raise the millions re-
quired to build the facility.
As a Syracuse native, I have to note that Ed’s ef-
forts are much appreciated. I swam in that old
YMCA, which was already an aging facility when
I was a kid. On behalf of all the many kids (former
and future) who will now also enjoy a fabulous
new facility, thank you, Ed!
Holly Steuart Robertson
,
vice president and
general manager of WHP-TV, CBS 21, in Harris-
burg, Pa., successfully spearheaded the station’s
$1 million switch to HD. She was quoted in the
Patriot-News
on the endeavor, which represented
a significant upgrade in signal quality and neces-
sitated an entire studio make-over: “It is very ex-
pensive to go HD, but you’ve got to do it right.
Any flaws in the studio, from paint cracks to
stained carpets, might be painfully obvious in the
glare of high definition. The HD camera doesn’t
miss anything.”

Class Reporter Fran Cress kindly shared
information on a special event well deserving of
alumni support across several classes. The sec-
ond annual “Get Your Rear In Gear” event was
scheduled to take place in Boston on October
13,
honoring Jim Gambee’s brother, William Scott
Gambee ‘80 who passed away from colon cancer.
Jimwas recently at St. Lawrence for a visit andwas
spreading the word on this run/walk, which raises
money for colon cancer research and awareness.
Scott’s daughters Caitlin and Maggie, along with
his wife, Patty, were instrumental in making this
event a reality. The William Scott Gambee Memo-
rial Walk was one of the event’s activities.
Last year’s “Get Your Rear in Gear” was the most
successful inaugural event of its kind in the
country, hosting 1,300 runners/walkers. Several
St. Lawrence friends and family participated; for
a few of them, see the picture on the next page.

Gordon Gannon
emailed in late May with news
of a rare Brent Byers sighting…..in Tokyo, of all
places! Gordon was there to participate in an
export development program through the U.S.
government. Gordon knew that Brent was sta-
tioned at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, South Korea,
and Gordon’s host at the Embassy in Tokyo had
offered to connect him to the Seoul embassy.
However, Brent was reported to be traveling and
unavailable.
But upon arrival at his hotel later that day, Gor-
don had a message from Brent indicating that he
too was in Tokyo, and staying at a hotel within
100
yards of Gordon’s! What are the odds of that
happening? They got together and after getting
over the shock of the very unlikely coincidence,
had a great dinner at an Indian restaurant (truly
an international affair!) and caught up on all the
happenings in their lives.
Gordon reports that “Brent has a fascinating job
as minister-counselor for public affairs for the
State Department and has held other positions in
Tel Aviv and Kiev.”
Bob Hajosy
’
s name came up
and, also coincidentally, Gordon informed Brent
that Bob and he were going to meet the follow-
ing week for lunch in NewYork City during a vaca-
tion that Bobwas taking. Bob is a physician in San
Diego. Bob and Gordon subsequently met up in
NYC and had a great time in Chinatown.

pool party. In attendance were their son David
MacClaren ’11 and daughter Whitney MacClaren

Prep” Weston ’75 and his wife Hope, who were
visiting from their home in New Jersey. Darcy was
recovering from knee surgery resulting from a ski
accident in February. Somehow, while hobbling
around on crutches, she was able to land a new
job with SAP as VP for sales emerging markets,
which started in March.
Joel continues with his Choice Media publish-
ing, and David is pitching in at Choice Media for
the summer, as he explores career opportunities.
Whitney is clinical administrative coordinator at
Boston Children’s Hospital. Michelle is a project
coordinator at J. Tallman Builders of Fairfield,
Conn., while Henley is chief investment officer
at Commonwealth Asset Management LLC and
frequently appears on Bloomberg TV discussing
economic and investment issues. “Prep” Weston
is sales and marketing manager at AmerTac.

June’s Alumni Council meeting at Canaras is al-
ways bittersweet as we say good-bye to leaving
members and welcome new members. We had
amazing weather and accomplished many things
while having a great time. Among the topics we
discussed were the recent alumni survey and the
campus master plan; for more on these, see “On
Campus.”
Ghislaine Gelhardt Germano
writes that she
got married last May to Craig Germano, a Clark-
son grad. She is still baking up a storm in Florida
and branching out to include traditional British
baked goods delivered locally and for shipment
nationwide. She and Craig are looking to move to
western North Carolina. Her daughter is looking
at colleges and her son is a pilot working at a char-
ter company that flies throughout the Bahamas
from Ft. Lauderdale.
Keep your eyes open: we have a cluster reunion
with ‘77 and ‘78 next spring.
