On Campus
We spotlight Kenya Semester Program
(
KSP) alumni in this issue of
St. Lawrence
,
so it bears noting that
2012
marks the 40th anniversary of the
beginnings of that program.
In January 1972, 15 pioneering
students, including four officers of the
Black Student Union, accompanied gov-
ernment professor Peter French and his
wife, Grace, on what French describes
as “a three-week seminar as part of the
old 4-1-4 program (that) became the
prototype for the KSP, with its rural
homestay, urban homestay and brief
internship. Who would have thought
all this could happen?” He adds that the
first “alumni” trip to Kenya took place
in June 1973, and included six members
of the Class of ’73, the parents of one of
them, a University trustee and a Canton
couple, along with Grace and himself.
The semester program commenced in
the 1974-75 school year.
One student on that first trip, Paul
Gilbert ’72, recalls one his best memo-
ries: “Attending Sunday church services
with my host family and later traveling
by foot to a village five miles away to
meet their extended family. They asked
me, ‘Why do you Americans spend so
much money to go to the moon? Is
there anything up there worth bring-
ing back?’; ‘Why do Americans shoot
their presidents?’; and ‘How come black
Americans do not talk to white Ameri-
cans?’”
