torrent, but a continuous modest flow is nice.
Of course, I could begin inventing Tony Awards
and Booker Prizes for us. But, if you send news for
the column, you don’t have to face the thought of
seeing your name next to “raises championship or-
chids,” “collects NASCAR hats” or “drives bumper
cars obsessively.”
Award for Best Actor in a Bike-Person Smash-up
goes to
Frank Anzalone
(in the role of walker).
Recovery has partner Dan in a major support-
ing role. I suggested to Frank that he find Laura
Hillenbrand’s best seller,
Unbroken
, the true story
of World War II combatant Louis Zamperini, to
pass the time and put his own wounds in perspec-
tive. Let’s hope Frank’s shoulder has knit well and
he’s back strolling the streets of Philly safely now.
Two of the locales in
Unbroken
are Hawaii and
Japan, which led me to ask
Fran Durham Brit-
ten
how the Japanese earthquake/tsunami af-
fected her on Oahu. “Those of us who were not
evacuated to high ground spent the night glued to
our TVs sending lots of thankful prayers that we
dodged the bullet this time,” said Fran. “It inspired
us to make sure all our warning systems are in
place and in order.” The Hawaiians, with many
connections to Japan, remain active in assistance
efforts, both physically and financially.
Fran is involved in her demanding and time-con-
suming real estate business and in the lives of her
granddaughters – Bella, 8, who lives nearby, and
Alana, 2, living far from her, near Toronto. Given
the world today, I suspect her family’s is not the
only story of geographic diversity in our class. If
some of you were/are involved in rescue efforts
for our string of environmental disasters or are on
the front lines in trying to avert some of the pos-
sible future ones, it would be great to showcase
those efforts in these pages.
Among the names of many who were able to
make substantial contributions to Momentum St.
Lawrence during the campaign were
Don Rose,
Jane Breckenridge Eisner, Judy Hart An-
gelo, Richard Stradling, Jeff Bijur, Gerald
Puschel
, the late
Trish Bogley Berneburg,
Peter Wasserman
and
Susan Parsons
Wolfe
(and their spouses). Their donations and
all the others – great and small — help ensure the
financial stability and future of our alma mater.
From the University I received notification that
Mario Cerroni
, one of the master’s degree
graduates of our class, had passed away. Those are
the news bulletins I don’t want to receive.
In Japanese the word
ikigai
loosely translates to
“what gets you up in the morning.” Write to share
your
ikigai
with the rest of us, your St. Lawrence
family. I’d love to be able to do a whole column on
the range of our answers. (Or just write – it gets
me up in the morning!)

Next Reunion: 45th, May 31-June 3,
2012 (cluster with ’67, ’68)
We’ll start with a reminder about our ’66 cluster
reunion next year, and, of course, a reminder to
mark the calendar for our 50th Reunion in 2016...
it’s not that far off. We hope that you and yours
start planning to come back to see the campus and
special classmates and friends both times, but in
particular for the 50th.
Right after our last deadline, we got an e-mail
from
Carol Blank Bloomer
, reporting that
they had just returned from a wonderful warm
month in Hilton Head, S.C., “where we enjoyed
the company of dear friends
Marty Denson
and Pete Beisler ’65. They are committed ‘three-
month Hilton Headers’ who head south from
Oquossoc, Me., each year after Christmas. This
was our second winter trip there (leaving behind
deep snow in Red Lodge, Mont.) and we are hap-
pily planning our third for 2012. Mid-March, we
all enjoyed a week-long visit from our Pi Phi sister
Pat Griffeth Douglas
and husband Don.They
drove from snowy Longmeadow, Mass., and en-
joyed their stay overlooking the Harbortown ma-
rina. At a golf outing and dinner, we were joined by
a sixth alum, my brother Jim Blank ’72 and his wife
Pat, both newly retired from GE. They winter at
their home in Pinehurst, N.C., and return to their
lake house in our hometown of PennYan, N.Y., for
the warmer months.”
Anne LeBeau Savage
and some of her Tri-
Delta sorority sisters had a reunion in New Or-
leans.
Freddy Scott-Baris
was the organizer,
and they stayed in the French Quarter, which “was
especially lively as it was French Festival Week-
end,” Anne wrote. Besides Anne and Freddy, those
there were
Susan MacDonald Johnson,
Marilyn Wright Perry, Karen Diesl Bru-
ett, Robby Richter Colvin, Donna Crear
Dellaportas, Ann Bissell, Sandra Panasci
Gardinier
and
Mary Cifrese Boyer
. Some
of the group went on a guided bike tour on the
Ninth Ward, which they said was interesting and
sobering. They could see the devastation caused
by Katrina and had a chance to talk with some res-
idents about the rebuilding efforts. Others opted
to go on a walking and tasting culinary tour of a
number of the well-known restaurants. Delicious
and interesting!!
But a real highlight was a private “Meet and
Greet” with the elephants and their keepers at the
New Orleans Zoo. “This was arranged for us by
Ann Bissell, who, in her spare time, is a volunteer
elephant keeper at the National Zoo in Washing-
ton, D.C.,” Anne explained. “She is also involved in
international efforts to save the world’s elephant
population. We were delighted to meet Jean and
Panya and ask many questions of their keepers. It
was interesting to know that the elephants were
put to work helping clear debris from the zoo af-
ter Katrina struck. They are very intelligent and
love to work.”

Richie Broadbelt
had lunch with
Hilary
Hartman Goodwin
as she was on her way
from Florida to their ranch inWyoming. She is in
good health and was looking forward to spending
the summer on the ranch. Richie also had lunch
with
Ann Breitner O’Reilly
and Arnie ’65.
Arnie is an excellent golfer and enjoys wintering
in Florida and summering in Clayton, N.Y. Richie
attended a reception for President Fox in Vero

Gene Simonsen
’s beautiful home.
He saw
Susan Beardslee

writes that June was a busy month
for his family... a trip to Dallas to see a grandson
graduate; a trip to DC to meet their newest grand-
daughter; preparation for visits from three grand-
sons; and daughter Courtney ’03, a foreign service
officer for the USAID left for a three-year post in
the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Nancy Palmer Appich
vacationed in June on
Sanibel Island, Fla., continuing a 33-year tradition...
with two daughters and families. In October, their
son and his family joined them for another week
on Sanibel. Nancy writes, “I had a lovely two days
with several of the KD’s from our class in our an-
nual mini-reunion in Florida in February.
Helen
Badger Druce
rents a condo and the Florida
KD’s,
Betsy Barratt Parker, Ann Newn-
ham Lloyd
,
Ann O’Reilly and I were joined by
Jean Sutherland McKee
, who vacations in
Florida for the month of February. We all look
forward to our time of catching up and sharing
news and photos. InAugust, several of us are going
to Colorado to visit
Pris Ledbury
and
Vivien
Easton Bower
.” She hopes to attend our 50th.
Tony and I are enjoying our time in New Jersey
and Rhode Island. His computer service business
is going well and I am still loving retirement!

Spring storms and summer droughts are in evi-
dence all over the country as I write this. And the
drought appears to have attacked the news stream
for members of the Class of ’64. I don’t need a
