Alumni Accomplishments
John
T. Major '77 has been named chief of the Bureau of Wildlife of the
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). He oversees
the 131-member bureau that includes nine wildlife units statewide, a
game farm, and central office units in the Albany area. After earning
his master's and doctorate at the University of Maine, he worked at
the University of Maine and as a consulting ecologist for the U.S. Agency
for International Development in Washington, D.C., and several African
countries, then joined DEC in 1984. An avid outdoorsman, he lives in
Rotterdam, N.Y., with his wife, Ruth; their son, Michael, is a student
at SUNY at Cobleskill.
Anne
Spencer Zapletal '92 has been named project manager of the new Interactive
Services Group at Eric Mower and Associates, the largest marketing communications
agency in New York State outside of Manhattan. She manages interactive
projects through all phases of production for such clients as Cooper-Crouse
Hinds, Inficon and Onondaga County Economic Development. The group employs
computer technology to create interactive presentation format such as
Web sites, CD-ROM, multimedia kiosks and point-of-purchase displays.
An English writing and fine arts major at St. Lawrence, she lives in
Syracuse with her husband, Robert C. Zapletal Jr. '92.
Susan
Pogodzienski Peck '89 received the juris doctor degree, cum laude,
from New England School of Law, Boston, on May 26, 2000. The chief environmental
risk officer at sovereign Bank New England in Boston, she is married
to Kevin Peck. In law shool, she was named to the Dean's List each semester
on served on the New England Law Review. She had an internship with
the chief legal counsel of the Massachusetts Highway Department and
was a member of the National Environmental Moot Court Competition team.

Terrence Gardner Jr. '88 has been named the top railroad stock-picker
by The Wall Street Journal. A vice president at Deutsche Bank Securities
in New York City, he told the paper that railroad stocks "have
been neglected for a ling time; they're due for a rebound." A former
Marine Corps officer who saw combat in Operation Desert Storm, he was
an RA and a member of SAE, the lacrosse and swim teams and the Rugby
Club in college, and also studied in the London Program. He and his
wife, Kerry, and their son, Edward, live in Brightwaters, N.Y.
Stephen
Pryor-Bennett '79 is the new editor of The Record-Review, the weekly
newspaper that serves Bedford Hills, N.Y., and vicinity. The paper has
won recognition as the best community newspaper in the state in each
of the last two years. A former reporter and editor for the Gannett
newspapers in Westchester County, N.Y., he was an English major at St.
Lawrence. He and his wife and their three children live in New Milford,
Conn.
Richard
J. Baltz '74 has been named directof of the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery
VA Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. He had been associate director from
1990 to 1997 before moving to Fayetteville, N.C., as director of the
VA hospital there. At Fayetteville, he was credited with improving services
to veterans and employee morale. He has been with the Veterans Administration
since 1977, and earned his master's in health care administration at
George Washington University in 1978. He and his wife, Melissa, have
a son, Christopher.
Carolyn
Waszkiewicz '00 is one of seven recent college graduates named traveling
consultants for Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity. Selections were based
on leadership skills, academic achievement and contributions to college
and community. During 2000-01 she is visiting over 30 collegiate chapters
of KKG to aid in chapter organization and programming. An economics/mathematics
major, she was a Trustee Scholar, economics teaching assistant and member
of the economics honorary and the Alcohol Task Force. She was also president,
treasurer and a member of the Scholarship and Standards committees of
St. Lawrence's KKG chapter. She is the daughter of John III '75 and
Barbara Lawrence Waszkiewicz '75, and her brother John IV is a member
of the Class of 2004.

What's Been Happening:
Colorado Rockies: Scott Forbes '87 hosted a pre-game picnic for Laurentians
at the Colorado Rockies baseball game on August 22.
US Open Tennis Tournament: 60 Laurentians joined Director of Athletics
Margie Strait, and Joy Ciarcia-Levy '86 for the Arthur Ashe Kid's Day
at the USTA Center in New York City on August 26 for a day of fun, great
weather, and some great tennis.
Golf Outing: Alumni Director Greg Griffin '91 had a chance to play
in a Laurentian Golf Outing with host David Thrun '88 and 28 others
at the Stow Acres Country Club in Stow, Mass., on September 16.
Cider Party: On October 14, 55 Laurentians came to hear Beak and Skiff
Farms owners David Pittart '74 and Steve Morse '68 explain the history
of the orchard and get a guided tour of the cider mill. Laurentian families
enjoyed a day of apple picking and some tasting. The afternoon was followed
by an unofficial trip from Lafayette N.Y., to Skaneatleles, N.Y., to
visit the Blue Water Grill, owned by Dan Riordan '76.
"SLU at the Zoo": Over 130 Laurentians came to the Bronx
Zoo on October 15 for a guided tour by Tracey McNamara '76 and to hear
about her recent contributions to identifying the West Nile Virus.
