New faculty cite their reasons for choosing St. Lawrence

A selective admissions process at St. Lawrence brings in some excellent students--the kind of students who attract faculty from across the globe, including some alumni. What drew them to the University?

Jeff Chiarenzelli ’81, associate professor of geology: “It's internationally known because of the diversity of the rocks and minerals.”

Paul Graham ’99, assistant professor of English: “After spending four years here as a student, I began to feel that this was my home--I have very warm feelings toward the campus and the community both.” St. Lawrence's strong creative writing program initially attracted Graham, while the tight-knit body of scholars in the English department and elsewhere helped lure him back to his alma mater to teach writing.

Richard Gonzalez, visiting assistant professor of anthropology: “The department and the people in the department felt like a family.”

Kathleen Self, assistant professor of religious studies: “The students are really on the ball, engaged with the material and enthusiastic about learning.”
Assistant Professor of Biology Aswini Pai: “I could immediately see the vision they had; I saw people who cared a lot about their teaching and research, and who had a positive attitude.”

Samantha Glazier, assistant professor of chemistry: “St. Lawrence seemed committed to providing the funds for research (via construction of the $36.9 million Johnson Hall of Science, which opened in fall 2007).”
